As I said already, very pleased with this deal.

As for the "Weber now, SK later" crowd, we know if we're matching or not by now. I'd hope so at least.

Like the deal though

well, at least Marty isn't spinning as much, so we're not drinking for a spinorama while yelling shoot the puck on the same line!

Just put him with Smith when Sk decides he wants to pass only he can pass it to someone who will shoot the puck everytime he touches it. Sounds like a good combo..

Just depends on how much ice time Smith earns. Yeah he shoots the puck, but if other guys are earning their time over him then you don't put him on a top line.

Of course, if SK doesn't earn his time either you might see them both on the third or fourth line.

I don't think we're going to be able to keep the puck out of the net enough to worry about the playoffs.

Smith was a rookie, I can see why his ice time was low. I expect it to go up this year.

Glad we got this done. Certainly not flashy but efficient. Good work Poile. Still think you should be fired though.

Don't think of it that way. At this point, in July, given what the team has done over the last few years, you're just assuming you're making the playoffs. No it doesn't look good, but no matter what they lose every team goes into every season with a new start.

If it happens that they don't make it, you cross that bridge when you come to it.

Hooray for arbitration dodged!

Can I count this as "good news"? I desperately need good hockey news right now.

Well, it isn't bad news. It's the only thing this summer that Nashville has been involved in that hasn't created a hole. There's that.

Smith should earn more ice time this year. I think he did a great job for a rookie. Hopefully he got a good idea of what it is going to take to be successful in the NHL and he worked his butt off this summer. Dude has a heck of a shot. How many posts did he hit last year? Thats a good thing he is putting the puck where it is going to get passed the netminder.
I would be ok with Smith and SK on the 2nd or 3rd line together.

Let's worry about getting a team together that can go 3 periods with anyone in the NHL next year before we worry about the playoffs.

sometimes you have to take what you can get.

SK isnt going to give up UFA years for what he assumes will be a salary thats a bargain if he keeps improving.. Poile isnt going to throw out a big enough number to get him to commit more than 2 years... so the solution that works for both is 2 yrs at reasonable money... SK certainly wont starve, and poile wont be in a bind due to this deal...

I like it... especially since Im not sure SK will ever be the 30 goal scorer we wish he was...

I'm not concerned with the UFA age thing with a guy like SK, it's only crucial for the top level guys. It's not like SK is going to be one of the main prizes in free agency when he gets there, and if he is it's because he took his game to the next level over the next two seasons which is a huge plus for Nashville.

Of course the missing part of the story is... Why are we working out a contract with SK74 in the middle of Weber's offer sheet dilemma?
um, because we have to ice 23 players not just Weber, and there was an arbitration deadline looming?

Im pretty sure Poile can do more than one contract at a time...

Well I'm one of the biggest SK fans there is so I'm very happy with this. I would've like more years on the deal but the money is a steal in today's market. Hopefully he'll earn a long term deal next time around.

Because decision on Weber was made the same day the offer sheet came in...

I'd believe that if the decision was to match if in any way financially possible.

Exactly, I agree. Let's discuss Weber issues in the 10 threads for him not SK's new deal thread

I like this deal because he basically doubles the production of Joel Ward an costs the same.

I think it is a good deal for both sides. At least he WANTS to stay. SK isn't going to be that sought after as a UFA like Weber or Suter so 2 yrs is fine. His brother hasn't even been signed by anyone yet.

I think this is a fair deal and he is earning what 40-45 point guys get. I think it help set the wilson deal up (2 mil per). Sadly, if we failed to match Weber's OS, i was thinking SK would get 4-4.5 (like Leino) to help reach the floor. Add in Blum's million, we are still 6 million ish away from the floor with 2 dmen to sign, a replacement and a 7th.
