I don't understand the rush with these contracts. Wouldn't it be better to wait for the new CBA and hope for a 5 year entry level deal?

I doubt the 5 year ELC thing will ever go through.
Any ways, good news!

You mean after the players get locked out and Galchenyuk plays in the KHL on a 2 year contract.
We wanted him and we signed him and that's never a bad thing. Things can always be worse.

No relation. But if he plays at least 10 NHL games, it burns one year of his contract.
Nine or less? The contract slides, and so does the cap hit due to the signing bonus that was paid.

I think he still can, except his contract doesn't commence until he plays professionally (ie:AHL/NHL). So as long as he's in junior he doesn't burn a year out of his elc.

Agreed, you'd think they'd wait. Maybe Bergevin is getting info from Molson that the owners aren't going to play hardball with that part of the CBA?

Nope, the contract keeps sliding until he goes pro.

There has to be some kind of reason why all those first round picks are getting signed right now... maybe GMs know more than what is thought to be common knowledge.

Sign them early so they don't change their mind and pull a Justin Schultz?

Don't think these kids drafted in 2012 would be affected by a change in ELC length in a new CBA since they were drafted while this current CBA was still in place. It would be starting for the 2013 crop.
And at most, I see the PA agreeing to 4 years on the ELC's.

It's a vote of confidence from the org. I see no problem with it. It's not a guarantee that he'll make the team this year, but it might be extra motivation.

Exactly, people around here aren't used to such high picks. You have to show that you believe in your Blue-Chipper!
