I say trade umburger+ and try to get a 4th 1st rounder. This is a deep draft and its time columbus does a proper rebuild. They have some hood young players. Build on that

Not going to happen.

Look. We get it. We suck and we should be rebuilding which means that every quality depth player you like for your team is going to be drooled over as Yet Another Possible Acquisition, team needs and/or situation be damned. But at least be up front and ADMIT IT rather than couching it as "advice" or "recommendations" from On High. It's bad enough that you're trying to poach our guys without insulting our intelligence.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!

Their own picks are going to way too high to lose in an offer sheet for compensation.

I would say package the other two to move it up so you have two high end picks. Because with their current roster they are more than likely drafting first again next year unless they get trolled by Edmonton again.

Hopefully they'll get the #1 pick then they can build around MacKinnon. Stock pile picks. A 3 year re-build and they'll be a decent team if you ask me.

ya but at this point what's the point in keeping him? He's valuable, he can bring in valuable younger pieces. If you're gonna rebuild you might as well just do it completely.

Keep them, draft well and finish your rebuild before Calgary actually starts

I stopped here because that's where you answered your own question.

The process of rebuilding does not mean you engage in a fetishistic quest to gain as many young lottery tickets as you can find. It means you dump portions of your core and assemble a new one however you can. There's no good reason for us to trade Umberger - he's a scoring forward (which we don't have many of), one of our more experienced leaders (he's a candidate for the C with Nash gone), and has an existing link to the community (from playing his college hockey here). Even with last year's down year he's still the most consistent forward we have ever had.

Trading him for picks and prospects would be counterproductive.

I think some people forget that you still need to ice a team and try to be competitive and that you need a leader or two while your team grows. There is also a salary cap that needs to be met and you need guys that make money on your team. I think you guys already have the foundation of a good young team. The next draft will help solidify that but I think you guys have a strong chance to be competitive this year.

That said, it should be kept in mind that a "package" similar to what happened in the Chris Gratton offer sheet could be made to save the 4 1st Round Picks heading the other way.
