Decent numbers, I think Tallon had to throw on the extra year to get the deal done. I think we saw his peak production last season. Tallon had to keep him, I think this is an alright deal for both sides. It'll be very curious to see where Verbeauty is on the depth chart in 2 years.

How is this a good deal? He had one decent year and it was a contract year.

You are clueless when it comes to the Panthers and their prospects(other threads)

In the 08-09 season he had 53 points
In 09-10 he had 44 points
10-11 46 points, mostly with Toronto and then Philly.
11-12 54 points in 71 games.

Seems like has had more than one decent year, don't you think?

This is his 4th season with at least 20 goals.

His lowest point total was 44 points, more than a .5 ppg clip in the NHL.

The salary cap, as of right now is 70 million, 4.4 million is 6% of the cap.

50+ points for 4.4 million a year, for a guy who is 26 years old, and still in his prime isn't a good deal? Please.

2008-2009 BLACKHAWKS 78 22 31 53
2009-2010 BLACKHAWKS 79 20 24 44
2010-2011 MAPLE LEAFS 53 14 21 35
2010-2011 FLYERS 27 7 4 11 4
2011-2012 PANTHERS 71 23 31 54

22, 20, 21, 23.

So the question is - what is the market for a 26 year old 20+ goal scorer in the NHL that is capable of putting up 50+ points?

Well, looking for a comparable, lets take a look at grabovski

Grabo this year: 28 years old, 74 games played, 23 goals, 28 assists, 51 points.
Steeg this year: 26 years old, 71 games played, 23 goals, 31 assists, 54 points

Grabo recently signed an extension for 5 years, worth 27.5 million. Or roughly 5.5 per year.

I think most would agree that Grabo is a more complete player then versteeg, and also plays a "premium" position (center).

So looking at the two contracts, Versteegs seems fair - a year less, and 1.1 mill less per year.

This shows you how bad the market has gotten for 20 goal scorers. Its a decent contract in todays market.

45+ points, last year 54, clicked very well with Weiss and Flash, adds grit...it's a good deal.

I appreciate you starting a little Tampa-Florida rivalry, but son, you are going about it all the wrong way.

LOL, nope the QO screwup had nothing to do with having to trade Versteeg. What's $2.5M/yr among friends?

I laugh at all the "Florida had to give him a long contract because it's Florida" posts in here.
I thought it might be longer just because he is playing well here, has a prior relationship with Tallon, and he has stated that he likes where this team is headed and wants to set down roots and be a part of it.

4 years is too much? Please.

#2 centres are more expensive than top 9 wingers. Versteeg is also an RFA vs Grabo's FA. Nice try, but you're comparing apples and oranges.

Uh, it doesn't really matter what label you want to put on the guy, the point is his production is right there with Grabo's. Also, "top 9 winger"? Uh ok.

Good deal for both sides. Steeger's the man, wish the Bruins still had him.

Uh the guy couldn't crack the Leafs and Flyers top 6 uh wonder why he got traded so many times and each trade uh he had a lower value?

He's a product of Weiss and Tomas. And uh yeah, it does matter what label I put on them. He obviously needs a guy like Weiss (who is comparable to Grabo) to make space for him.

My life is now complete because a player is now officially a "product" of superstars Tomas Fleischmann and Steven Weiss. I love it.

Prospect, cap reasons, needing extra picks, and just didn't fit: reasons he was traded, so you can stop wondering.

You of course ignore that the contract he signed was for 3 years, not a 1-year deal resulting from arb

Some guys don't work on every team. Doesn't mitigate the fact that he works for the Panthers and he worked for the Hawks. Tallon trusts him. Further, all things being equal (i.e. ignoring positional needs), nobody takes Grabovski over Versteeg at 5.5 vs 4.4.
