Remembering the Icecaps

Just wondering if anyone here remembers the Icecap days. Wanting to hear stories, memories, whatever regarding the franchise.

First hockey game I attended was the IceCaps. Don't remember much, except the IceCaps lost and I left the game wondering why their goalie was hanging out by the bench near the end of the game, leaving the net wide open.

I have two Icecaps pennants sitting above me right now. Some games had so much fog on the ice prior to puck drop that the players had to skate around the rink to clear it out. Dorton Arena was never really designed for hockey.

Yeah I've heard about this. It's my understanding that during the day the sun would shine right on the ice, and that Dorton had little to no A/C.

The cool part is that there are a still few former IceCaps kicking around the minor pro ranks and europe.

This.

My parents took me to many Icecaps games back when i was 4 or 5 years old (I'm 21 now). I used to love going to games and i actually remember being extremely bummed/pissed when i found out they were leaving because some "NHL" team was coming to Raleigh. At that age i had no concept that we were getting a "bigger" team than the icecaps and i was mad up until i went to my first Hurricanes game at Dorton Arena. Since then my love for the sport and our team has grown exponentially.

I went to a few games between 96-98 but I recall very little about it other than wanting to see if I could climb to the top of Dorton.

I discovered hockey through the Checkers, so the IceCaps were very much a part of that experience as an opponent. By that time (94-98) the Caps were struggling on the ice, and were less of a rival than the other East Division teams, so my memory of them is mostly as a team that you wanted to beat without too much trouble.

Looking over their rosters from that period, some of the names still resonate. Lyle Wildgoose (of course), Darren Colbourne, Howie Rosenblatt, Trever Sim, Spencer Meany, Kurt Kleinendorst. A brief spell with Phil Berger. I remember Brad Mullahy made me mad one time, but I have no memory of why.

Like others have said already, those ECHL games taught me to love hockey. That old East Division was just incredible with the rivalries that existed between the 7 teams (counting both Greensboro and SC, who were in the divison at different times). Much as I appreciate the growth of Raleigh into an NHL city and Charlotte, Norfolk and formerly Greensboro into AHL cities, I really do believe that we lost something valuable to Carolinas/Virginia hockey when that group went their separate ways.

Knowing how long ago that was, I immediately wanted to question this, but doing the math, I guess it's possible.

I know that Goose and Jimmy Powers are still in the area. Jimmy owns Piper's Tavern in N Raleigh, and he has a poster of Caps team that he captained up on the wall (along with some Canes memorabilia). He's a friend from a life I once had.

Only made it to a few Icecaps games, but it was always a good time. Not sure if the Icecaps had a similiar phenomenon with the other NC teams, but I recall very vividly the amount of hatred when I would attend Richmond vs Hampton Roads games. Fights in the stands, bench clearing brawls, etc.

Good times, and cheap entertainment. It's as close to "Slapshot" as you're going to get in the lower 48. You had teams full of goons, nightly fights, ugly games, low talent levels, and drunken fans! What's not to love? Although the IceCaps were really not one of the gooney teams. They had a few tough guys over the years, but Wildgoose did not like that style of hockey, and the IceCaps never put he fear into any opposing teams. I saw a player pelted with beer and sodas after throwing a chair into the crowd and hitting a girl! I saw players forced to skate laps to help clear the fog. Dorton arena did not have AC back then, and when it was warm or raining outside, the place would steam up. They'd bring out the crew to squeege the glass off too.

Digging up an old thread, but I am on the hunt for an old IceCaps jersey. Anybody know where to start looking for one? No luck on eBay, and google only got me so far, lots of old archived threads on various websites pointing to dead ends. I'm moving to seattle in a couple months, and figure now is my best chance to score one that might still be floating around in this area. ANY HELP AT ALL is appreciated!!

My only real memory was taking an insane 22-hour road trip from Baton Rouge to Raleigh with a couple of buddies because they were playing the La. IceGators. I didn't know North Carolina from North Dakota at the time, little did I know I would later end up living there for 5 years.

I did a bong hit with some girl I had never met at a house party afterward. Two years later, I married her.

Went to many a game as a kid.

Among many favorite memories were the wacky guys who would row furiously to the same song every game. Or at least that's what it looked like to me as a kid.

And of course Ron the Ref aka Cappy Bear

The rowing guys, were rowing tothe "Hawaii Five-O" theme song.

I recall the annoying cow bells!

As for a jersey, I'd try all of the thrift stores and Goodwill type places.

My suggestion was going to be to check if the Meigray Group had one, but I just checked and they don't

Good times. You'd see players get tossed and then would return to the bench later to play. Can't throw everybody out.

I have one. It's the original (and best) logo road jersey in blue.

I believe it's an XL. Not sure though but when I go visit my folks today ill bring it home with me. It's in my old room hanging in the closet. It hasn't been worn in probably 16 years and is in great shape.

I'm sure we can make a deal.
