John Tavares' contract with the Isles is paying dividends around the league. Nobody that age deserves a better contract than JT, so guys like Kane don't have much of a case for a bigger deal.

We need to be careful, as these numbers do not represent the entire financial picture of the teams. In a nutshell, these figures are for the birds. Hockey teams (and most sport organizations) are structured into two or more legal entities, from which the TEAM is part of one and the BUILDING is in any case ALWAYS part of another. The team collects revenues from games, memorabillia, tv rights, food, beverage,...etc, and pays rent and other rights to the building owners. This is where the creative accounting takes place and where , for example, the last CBA negotiation was centered on, that is to determine the REAL revenues and profits of the organizations. It is funny to hear how half of the teams are crying for survival, while when available, they are sold to very savvy business people for at high prices...and when free agency starts, we always think that we had seen the last absurdity, only to be introduced to a new one.

This list, for example, lists New Jersey as being 13th in brevenues, while word is out that they are $70M short. If that is true, this would imply that half of the league is in trouble.

It is of common knowledge that teams such as Toronto, NYR, Montreal, and Philadelphia are very
profitable as they are always fully sold out AND their BUILDINGS are also gold mines as they are booked for concerts, shows, and events for most of the available days...but this is all we really have as info.

To conclude, we must have all the figures in order to assess a team's REAL financial position, which we won't have unless we are their bankers or accountants. Inexperienced journalists regularly jerked
around by team owners because of this.

This was my two cents.

Based on that info the Jets would be bottom 3, ahead of only Phoenix and NYI...
This is what you are missing:

You are quoting a link to Forbes Team WORTH rankings, not last years revenue rankings..

I'm surprised he isn't looking for more or at least only willing to sign for that amount on a shorter contract. $4.8m will be a steal.

Huge steal. You have to watch him over the full course of a game to truly see why he's so gifted

This deal would be an absolute steal for the Jets if it happens.

Given what Versteeg got I'd take Kane at 600k more in a heartbeat. Nice term too.

Ya was gonna say, that's a steal for Winnipeg. If they could get him to sign that, it would bode well for the entire organisation.

Considering and signing are 2 different things. If he signs that contract his agent should be fired on the spot. 6 yr deal he needs to get 5.5 per at least. And for the record, I am not a Kane fan, but 20 yr old pwr fwds getting 30 goals get more than 4.8 per.

A couple things are wrong with your source

1) That article was published in January; long before the end of the season; still lots of money to be made.
2) He does not provide a method for his the determenation of his numbers.
3) If you actually look at his source, it says nothing about any team making or loosing money; just an assessment of their net value.

Personally I would rather quote reputable sources

Quote:
True North Sports and Entertainment won’t know for absolute certain until the league’s revenues and finances are audited after the playoffs are over, but Chipman’s actual point was that revenues for the NHL’s first season back in Winnipeg have exceeded expectations to the point the Jets could well be in the league’s top 15 of revenue.

If they’re not, they’ll be close to that, and any revenue-sharing amount that would come to them would be negligible.

Chipman wouldn’t disclose the Jets’ number for 2011-12, but given his statements it’s likely just less than $100 million.

Good for the Jets. The whole story of Winnipeg getting their team back is a nice one. Glad to see hockey is strong over there again. Great deal for the Jets if true

If I were the Jets I'd be trying for more like 8. 6 years barely takes him out of RFA.

I figured he was joking about "The Price Is Right"ing them. "twenty nine million and one dollars!"

What is wrong with his source is that it bases its estimates from the Forbes' NHL team value assessments - which were done last November. Those assessments added a slight value increase to the team based upon the sale price of the team. Since the season had yet to be played however all of the revenue number estimates were based upon the previous season, meaning in Winnipeg's case those revenue numbers were actually the revenue the team garnered in Atlanta during the previous season.

The average ticket price in Winnipeg was more than double that in Atlanta, approximately 125% higher.
http://www.fancostexperience.com/pag...fci_pdfs/6.pdf
As such, we can safely assume that Winnipeg's revenue numbers left Atlanta in the dust.

The problem with that poster's comment was that they erroneously claimed Winnipeg to be a poor team and based that assumption upon Atlanta's revenues, not Winnipeg's.

Yeah, it is amazing how some can be so uninformed that they are clearly not aware that 50% of Winnipeg's ownership also happens to be one of the richest men in the world and is also (easily) the richest individual owner in pro sports in North America. David Thomson could buy the entire league several times and would still rank on Forbes billionaire list afterward. The belief that the Jets could be intimidated by an offer sheet is incredibly misguided.

No doubt they could afford it, just not so sure that contract would be a smart hockey move.

Then we need to assume that no one would submit an offer sheet for that amount.
