Nashville was also trying to deal Weber at the time of his signing the offer sheet, so I'm confident that both sides are looking for a clean break.

Been thinking today, though; what would it be like around here had it been GM Joe who floated that same offer sheet towards Shea? It's not like we can't afford him, and adding Weber makes us instant contenders. Not part of Gagliardi's game plan, I guess, or perhaps Weber's camp told the Stars not to bother.
If Weber was not ok with staying in Nashville for the next 14 years he would not have signed a 14 year offersheet.

I for one would have been ecstatic if we had made that same sheet for Weber hypothetically, he is probably the best defenseman in the league right now all things considered and would be easily worth giving up 4 firsts for a player of his caliber for 14 years

I'd assume everyone would be ecstatic if it were the Stars that did it. There would be no reason not to be.

Sharks are looking pretty ridiculous right now for trading McGinn/Sgarbossa for what amounts to Galiardi.

Anisimov, Dubinsky, Erixon, and a 1st.

That's what Sather ended up paying for Nash, after all this time.

Not a great deal for C-bus, but not terrible either. I don't recall Nash as a Stars-killer, really, so this won't affect us too much, but it's good to see some action in a relatively quiet offseason.

Nash never really killed us, but glad to see him go to the East.

Didn't overpay big time, but Erixon is a good piece. Anisimov and Dubi are solid 2nd/3rd line options.'

I'm going to miss Artem.

Anyone else find it funny that Erixon refused to sign in Calgary, decided that New York was where he wanted to play and now he finds himself trade to Columbus?

Pretty good deal for NYR. They gave up quite a few pieces but they got back a true first line forward. Nash has his issues but he's also scored at least 30 goals each of the past 5 seasons. Columbus must be taking the PHX approach this next season, as they have plenty of 2nd/3rd line players but not any real top line talent. They had better hope that they learn to play defense and that Bobrovsky has a Mike Smith type of season or Columbus will be looking at a lottery pick.

So, New York gets Nash and Ichiro on the same day.

Must be nice.

If I was Howson, I'd would had demanded Del Zotto in that deal.. They are still miles from being a playoff team..

Nash will be a hit in NY, no doubt about that..

Scared of what Nash will do. If he can put up 30-30-60 with pretty much no help at all, imagine what he could do playing with a guy like Gaborik or Richards.

That said, there's a chance he doesn't adjust to not being "the man" anymore. Don't think that'll be a problem, but who knows.

Howson has been working teams over this whole time looking for exceptional return. I'm sure he asked for Del Zotto (or more). Ultimately, Nash held all the cards and CLB didn't want to trade him to "rival" Detroit.

With the Nash drama behind 'em, my hot sports prediction is CLB improves significantly next season... pro-rated pace of 80+ points.

All eyes are on him now, and he's no longer sheltered by the weak Columbus hockey media. Now he's almost at Canada-level media attention.

Hockey doesn't get that much love in NYC sports media.

Hockey not getting much attention in New York is still a lot more attention than in Columbus where despite their immense struggles and Nash underachieving he was rarely critisized.

Well, Nashville matches, it's the most expensive contract they've ever done.

Colour me shocked.

Ditto. Was expecting them to not match because that is a lot of dollars for a team with a history of tight budgets.

ESPECIALLY since if you look at that contract... 4 straight years of 13 million+ signing bonuses. Poile should've let him walk...

This would have been the absolute worst thing Nashville could have done, would have practically killed their organization to lose Weber for 4 20-30 picks

They pretty much had to to hit the cap floor unless they were willing to pay Doan or Semin 7+M. Not all that surprised, but I think we could still see him traded.

Was really hoping he'd be out of the West...

That's a tough choice to make because that's a massive payout, but you can't let one of the league's top defensemen go for draft picks. Especially after already losing Suter. Losing your top defensive pairing in one off-season would devastate a team. The only problem is that with that amount of cash tied in Weber, Nashville will likely go without true offensive talent again.

Thing I don't understand is that from Weber's agents comments the player signed the offer sheet because he doesn't want to stick around for another rebuild, or somesuch thing. So it seems he was basically counting on Nashville not matching. If he wanted out there were better ways and he still would've gotten that same type of contract in a year.
