With Rick Nash gone, who does everyone think the next captain in the club will be?
I think it will be Aucoin for the time he plays here with the alternate captains still being Prospal, and Umberger but the future captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets in my mind is Jack Johnson.
C - Johnson
A - Umberger, Wisniewski, Prospal, Dorsett
I suspect the A rotation would be 2 constant at home and 2 constant on the road similar to what Vanouver does. Maybe Vinny and RJ at home, Derek and Wiz on the road.
I would think that Dubinsky would sneak into the rotation during injury time while eventually moving in on a permanent basis in the future once he is established on this team.
The best thing about these 6 names is that we don't have to question the work ethic of any of them unlike some previous years.
This really needs a poll. I would vote JMFJ with A's going to Prospal, Umby, and someone who speaks both English and Russian. That said, I'd really prefer to let the PLAYERS decide who their on-ice leaders will be.
No captain, roll with three rotating A's between Johnson, Umberger, Wisniewski, Prospal, Tyutin and Dorsett. 3 can wear it for home games and the other 3 for road games. Then sometime this or next season the players and team can decided who they think has earned the right to be the captain.

I say:
1. No captain before Christmas - make them play for it.
2. A's rotating between all the vets.
3. If a leader rises out of the mix, give them the C.

yes, i agree as well. Would be nice to see Dubinsky as a Blue Jacket before naming a capt.
he retires next year and becomes part of the Organization at the end of the season
Johnson gets the C in 2013
reasons:
johnson has played less than 20 games in the Union Blue.
Do you think this group can make the playoffs this year? I like our chance better in 2013 and you do not want to wreck Johnsons confidence by making him the new Captain of the losing Culture.
Prospal wants this team to succeed more than anyone IMO remember how vocal he was during our early season losing streak? we have lacked a vocal leader for to long!
2012
C - Prospal
A - Johnson
A - Dorsett
A - Umberger
2013
C - Johnson
A - Umberger
A - Dubinsky
A - Johansen

This.
And leesmith: Prospal can speak both heavily accented English and fluent Russian.
If Johnson is as he seems to this outsider-a natural leader-then why wouldn't he just be named as Captain?
The notion of some rotational nonsense just continues the drifting, meandering path of this sorry franchise. If JJ is a lousy Captain, then take it away.
Umberger as a Captain? Is anyone really serious about this? Umgarbage took the money and ran last year. His play was beneath lackluster save for a meaningless late season surge. His 12 PIM should have earned him the Blue Jacket Ice Capade of the Year honors.
Richards ought to just make Johnson the Captain and run with him. Why make Prospal a one year Captain? What's the point of that. This is a made over team and the core for years to come is in place. JJ is part of the future; Prospal is not. Vinnie with an "A" makes perfect sense, however. Perhaps rotate the other "A" among Dorsett and others given the number of new players on the squad.
c - johnsona - umberger, wisniewski, prospal, dorsett

The fact that Howson stated that he and Richards haven't talked about it, but they might involve the players, is interesting to me. This team has potential and they need strong leadership. A captain is important. I hope one is named after training camp but before the pre-season. I hope the players are involved in the decision more than the GM or coach.
I like Johnson's experience as a captain for previous teams. He understands the role so it shouldn't impact his play. Plus, we all know he is going to play big minutes. Vinny is the perfect "A" because he elevates younger players' games and will support JmfJ. Wiz, RJ, and Dorse are strong alternates.

I don't think Umberger was dogging it, he had a slump. It happens in sports. I don't know if RJ gets the C, but he is a serious candidate

RJs last 15 games makes me all the more furious about what happened the first 65.
That wasn't a slump. That was a guy who wasn't that good to begin with taking half assing it.
In the pantheon of bad Howson moves, giving a 4th liner a 4.5 million dollar AAV extension doesn't get nearly the mention it should. Capn should complain about it more.
