OfferSheet on Jamie Benn

According to Bob Stauffer, a very "in the know" man for the Oilers, there is a rumour out there that a Canadian team has put an offer sheet in on Jamie Benn.

Bob thinks it could be Calgary, but is not sure..

Why would Calgary do that? Why would Toronto do that? Both teams are years away from contending and those draft picks will most likely be top 10 caliber.

The only thing that makes sense is it is a typical Feaster move. Does not accept that he needs to rebuild and thinks he is a contender still.

Calgary does desperately need a centre though so that is why Bob suggested Calgary.

Feaster is stupid enough to think his draft picks aren't going to be top ten for years to come.

Given the relationship between Tom Gagliardi and Francesco Aquilini, I wonder if it's the Canucks?

Dallas will match anything that's not outright silly.

Well that's not going to end well.

Question for Dallas fans...

Team [A] signs Jamie Benn to an offer sheet of 5 years, worth $6 725 000, meaning the compensation would be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Round Pick. What do the Stars do? I think they'd match.

Maybe Feaster think he will have the best duo in the NHL with Benn-Jankowski and that he don't need other 1st round pick ...

If there was an offersheet at 6m or under that I didn't think the Stars would match, I'd send it from a Canucks perspective but I don't think there is.

Waste of time, just like Weber.

how on earth would they imagine it woudnt be matched?
also, isnt the Dallas owner loaded, so any front-loading Flyer-type bankrupting-shots wouldn't work..?

As much as it sucks, id take the picks. That is a huge contract and the compensation is not great but you cant tie yourself down to a offer like that.

Toronto - I doubt Burke would do it after the fuss he made following the Penner offer sheet
Montreal - Might do it because they had a great draft and could consider those picks expendable. Benn is the big center the team has needed, but so is Galchenyuk.
Ottawa - No space with Spezza and Turris
Winnipeg - no space and I don't see Chevy doing it. Although we have three 2nd rounders and two 3rd rounders next year, the 2013 draft is supposed to be very deep.
Edmonton - No space in their top six.
Vancouver - Would make the most sense if they didn't have Sedin and Kesler
Calgary - I could see Feaster doing it.

I doubt very much this is true, but if it is, I doubt Calgary is the team with the offer sheet, due to the fact they do not currently hold their 2nd round pick in next years draft(Cammalleri trade), unless they plan on offering him over 8 million a season with compensation of 4 1st rounders, but I find that very hard to believe. To me the Canucks sound like the perfect team to give out an offer sheet, due to the fact that they always draft in the bottom 3rd of the draft every year, so they'd probably be willing to sacrifice a few draft picks in order to acquire a young power forward in the making

Why wouldn't you want to get your hands on a stud player in exchange for draft picks, even if they are high?

That's what I thought.

So realistically, a team would have to spend at least $6 730 000 to even get Dallas thinking about walking way (comp. of 2 1st Round Picks, 2nd, 3rd).

Ottawa couldn't be in the brackets unless they offered less than $5 046 585, or more than $8 410 976 (4 1st Round Picks), because our 2013 2nd Round Pick was moved to St. Louis for Bishop.

So was Bob commenting on the Eklund rumor or is there actual truth to it?

As for teams, first question is who is missing picks?

I remember Gillis having to make a trade to get one of his picks back needed for an offersheet.

I know Benn is predominantly a Center, but can he be moved back to LW?

Burke has no problem giving offer sheets

What he did have a problem with was not discussing trade or even having the courtesy of stating intent to offer sheet

That's what he did with kessel. He told bruins either they work out a trade (that's better in their favor) or they sign kessel to an offer sheet

He isn't against them, just the process

Calgary could......but not having their own 2nd rounder does eliminate several ranges:

Quote:
$1,110,249 or below - No Compensation

Over $1,110,249 to $1,682,194 - 3rd round pick

Over $1,682,194 to $3,364,391 - 2nd round pick

Over $3,364,391 to $5,046,585 - 1st round pick, 3rd

Over $5,046,585 to $6,728,781 - 1st round pick, 2nd, 3rd

Over $6,728,781 To $8,410,976 - Two 1st Round Picks, 2nd, 3rd

Over $8,410,976 - Four 1st Round Picks
Hypothetically, Calgary could tender an offer sheet of say 5 years, 25 million.

He got back Vancouver's 3rd rounder in the Booth/Samuelsson trade. So that would be enable Vancouver to make a few different offers.

Not gonna be Montréal. Team likely wants to hold on to their picks at this point. It's something I see them do in a few years though.

According to Prosportstransactions, Calgary does not have their 2nd Round Pick.
