Well, the rest of te Central has been noticeably weakened so that should help.

I'm with Reign Nateo on this one.

Columbus is a better team today than the one that ended last season and in fact they now have 13 million in cap space and next year when Mason and others comes off the books they will have 30 million in space with only Anisimov and prospal as major players to sign and even then unless Anisimov has a huge year(which would be great for them) they won't command a lot of money.

if Johansen develops a bit into a #2 center i could see them going after a big name UFA forward(getzlaf?) and throwing money at him and then getting a goalie from somewhere and suddenly they don't look too bad

This smacks of Courtnall-Momesso-Ronning (and Dirk).

Why does it have to be either, 1) Holmgren stupid, Gillis genius or 2) Holmgren genius, Gillis stupid?

Holmgren's offersheet was well thought out and it was worth a try. Gillis had a feeling it wouldn't work. Neither of these two GM's have lost or gained anything.. So why is either parties getting bashed/praised?

Both of them were smart for doing what they did/tried to do.

Good for the Preds, really did not see this ending any other way.

at least we don't have to see weber trade proposals for at least a year. It's been a pipe dream for quite a while.

Because the only person who struck out here is Holmgrem? In a world without Holmgren, a team might have successfully pried Weber from the Preds this summer.

Gillis deserves some credit for reading the situation right.

Definitely give credit where credit is due. Gillis did, in fact, read the situation right.

Holmgren's offersheet has ruined things for the Canucks though, which is a bit of a kick in the teeth.

Can people stop saying Gillis is stupid for not offersheeting Weber now?

Phew, so glad that Nashville matched. Could have been a disaster for Gillis. Now it's just a calculated and cool decision.

Weber must thrilled, lol. I guess we'll see next summer if he has the balls to demand a trade from a team that paid him 27 million in 11 months and 1 week.

There is no credit to be thrown out here. Gillis did the right thing, but he still comes out a loser here. In the end, it's possible everyone comes out a loser. Weber because he may have actually wanted to leave Nashville (probably not), Nashville because they put themselves in a financial bind now, and every other team in the league because they have no chance at Weber now.

The next question is who does Holmgren offer-sheet next? Subban? Kulikov?

He might not have trading partners at the end of summer.

More like who's going to offersheet one of Philly's RFAs.

I'm happy Nashville matched, their franchise would have been screwed if they would have taken the 4 late 1st round picks.
Now they can wait until next off-season and trade him for much more.

I hope Nashville (or some other team) offers Voracek a big contract just to **** with Philly.

Here's my question if Schroeder shows well, moving forward in a year or two would you toss around the consideration of Kesler + 1st + Prospect for Weber?

Good for Nashville. Predatory (no pun intended) move by the Flyers in doing what they did, nice to see the Preds step up. Whether or not Weber wants to stay, he's worth a TON more in a trade locked up to that kind of deal at a pretty reasonable cap hit.

I honestly don't see why nashville would ever want to trade Weber. You don't trade someone who is the best player at their position for any reason in my opinion.

Especially since they have him locked up forever now, and they will no doubt choose not to give him an NTC, which means if he ever asks for a trade he will have no ability to control his destiny.

Predators might not want to trade him, but if it's obvious he wants out and causes the organization a nuisance than you should move him especially with this offer sheet he just signed.

It was pretty obvious he wanted out.

I disagree. It was pretty obvious he wanted to get paid prior to lifetime contracts being abolished with the new CBA.

Just like Sakic, Kesler, Ohlund, and Backes wanted out?

If Weber wanted to cut ties with the Predators he made about the stupidest possible decision he could have in signing an offer sheet. Why would you give a team you didn't want to play for the option to match your contract and be tied to them for 14 years without any kind of NMC/NTC?

Then why did he sign an offersheet knowing that the Preds could (and did) match? That seems like a person who wanted a certain dollar and term amount rather than someone who desperately wanted to leave Nashville. I would think that he would have demanded a trade if he wanted out that badly.

****ing Holmgren. I wonder if Weber would've signed our offersheet if Philly hadn't sent in theirs...

What you don't have to wonder about is whether Nashville would have matched.
