There's a real war of opinions in my brain right now. In part I'm glad about the move because I thought the Predators would be hard done by if they lost yet another franchise player. My selfish-Flyers-fan voice, though, is pretty crestfallen. It was just too delightful to think about the defense built around Weber.

I am consoling myself at thinking of what the cost would have been to persuade the Nashville braintrust from matching and being glad that Holmgren didn't cave.

0 risk high reward. Love the attempt. That's all I ask for.

Good for Nashville I always liked them and wish them the best. Their fans should be lining up to buy tickets and weber jerseys to help pay that deal.

They'll make it. I expect the Flyers' move to be a key part of the next CBA negotiations. Nashville stepped up against a big team, and whatever happens financially in the future, Bettman and the NHL will look upon this move fondly.

Weber is the big winner here. He got his big contract.
I doubt he minds staying in Nashville. He had to know they were more than likely going to match.

a message that the Predators would only go so far to protect its best players and be pushed around by teams with 'deep pockets?'
Duh, Nashville, you've let the Flyers do this before to you. Does someone need to remind your mgmt. of all the ex-players we have traded to get and they did better here?

Kimmo Timonen
Scott Hartnell
Scottie Upshall
Ryan Parent (pushing it, I know)

We got something for nothing in the kimmo and harntnell trade, we weren't resigning them, and I do believe we got Parent back for hamhuis (how did that work out)

It would have been nice but alas. The one big consolation I keep coming back to is that these super long deals seem to pretty much always backfire. At least that is what I tell myself anyway.

Well Nashville will sure be pushing hard for no lockout. I can guarantee you that much. For the record I think they need a new GM. I know he has been getting praise from some media sources but I think he blows at asset management. In the last month he overpaid for a partier, let a fantastic D leave for zippo, and now is overpaying for Weber because he couldn't sign him long term even though he had a year to do it. Actually he had more then that because he should have never gone to arbitration to begin with. If I were a Preds fan I don't know how I would feel about the captain being taken to arbitration one year and then being kept long term only because they matched a crazy long and top heavy deal. It feels a lot like "oh no you don't", instead of "we are excited to be announcing..."

I must get off the site. Every time I see Preds match offer sheet at the top it kills me a little bit inside.

Where are my "it's a lock" "they can't match" buddies now?

Let's make a list.

Pens fan (coming in peace...dammit)

We hate you and you hate us but for today, I'll speak as someone that can understand the sting of having your grips on an awesome player and then losing him.

Tough break guys. Real bummer for you. I guess this means Doan?

I don't know about 0 risk, you know Nashville is not going to forget this, I'm pretty sure they'll be thinking about taking liberties on Schenn, Giroux or Couturier when its RFA time. It could be a potential hornets nest for poaching, but I could be wrong.

People keep saying this, but there's no reason to believe it will happen. We offersheeted Kesler, and Vancouver hasn't sniped any of our players.

On top of that, there isn't any offer they can make we aren't capable of matching.

Umm no! They have practically all their finances tied up in Rinne and Weber. Im pretty sure we wont have to worry much about them poaching our players. Im sure their ownership will now require that their players buy their own socks....

Do you honestly believe a small market team is going to be submitting an offer sheet?

Will Nashville look bad if they trade Weber after the year long trade ban comes off?

Except you're incorrect. Do you have any examples of this actually happening?

GMs don't run on spite, unless they're crappy GMs.

They would never sign an OS of $3 million per year.

Clarke was pretty spiteful and he made some pretty bad miscalcs as a result. The McCrimmon and Lindros situations come to mind...
