Woo-hoo!!!!

This guy was the epitome of a tweener. Sucked in an offensive role, and was as weak and timid as a 4 year old girl.

Good riddance.

As soon as someone can explain how the Ottawa Senators can reach the cap floor without making a relatively substantial move, I'll drop it.

Don't judge lines or anything, but assuming this is what Murray would make our roster:

CAPGEEK.COM USER GENERATED ROSTER
My Custom Lineup
FORWARDS
Guillaume Latendresse ($2.000m) / Jason Spezza ($7.000m) / Milan Michalek ($4.333m)
Jakob Silfverberg ($0.900m) / Kyle Turris ($1.400m) / Daniel Alfredsson ($4.875m)
Colin Greening ($0.817m) / Peter Regin ($0.800m) / Chris Neil ($2.000m)
Zack Smith ($0.700m) / Jim O'Brien ($0.638m) / Erik Condra ($0.625m)
Kaspars Daugavins ($0.635m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Erik Karlsson ($6.500m) / Sergei Gonchar ($5.500m)
Chris Phillips ($3.083m) / Marc Methot ($3.000m)
Jared Cowen ($1.265m) / Mike Lundin ($1.150m)
Mark Borowiecki ($0.610m) /
GOALTENDERS
Craig Anderson ($3.188m)
Ben Bishop ($0.650m)
BUYOUTS
Bobby Butler ($0.050m)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $70,200,000; CAP PAYROLL: $51,718,333; BONUSES: $1,175,000
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $18,481,667

Cap Floor $54 200 000
Cap Payroll $51 718 333

That would mean we would roughly need $2 500 000 to spend on someone. That's enough money that it has to be at least a roster player and not a 13th forward or something. That's still a 22/23 man roster, but the biggest add we could make would be Zibanejad @ 1.7 million, and we're not going to make him a 4th liner with 10 minutes per game.

EDIT: Again, I didn't really configure the lineups so don't make fun of those terribad defensive pairings.

Butler being bought out, or Butler playing, we were still underneath the floor.

Something is going to have to happen regardless of Butler's future with the Sens.

Maybe we've agreed to waive him to see if there are any NHL teams that want him; otherwise, we'll buy him out and re-sign him to a cheaper 2 way contract.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that the floor will be lowered in the new CBA. (Some owners want it gone entirely.) The owners are looking for concessions, obviously, and that's a pretty easy one for the players to give without hurting too many of their members. Even if the floor was cut by, say, 10%, the Senators would be above it.

What this (and the other moves this off-season) are telling me is that Mika will make the opening night roster. Not that I want it to happen unless he earns it over someone else, but it's what I think it's what's gonna happen.

That's not allowed. Goes against the CBA (I believe).

I know you couldn't do it for compliance buyouts (those to players before the last CBA started) but I'm not sure if that rule still applies.

I partially agree, but not entirely.

We're not really in a spot where we COULD be a money spending team anyways. We're still in a rebuild, and we weren't realistically getting Suter or Parise. With that being said, I wouldn't be surprised if we were the team that offered Garrison a lot more than Vancouver.

Do you really think the cap floor will be the same after the CBA is reached? A third of the League is below it as of now. If they were worried about it, I doubt they would be buying guys out.

While this is most likely what will happen, I'd like to point some things out.

1) There are only 5 teams that are below the cap by more than $1 100 000. A simple signing of an RFA or a 13th forward or 7th defenceman would steer us clear.
2) I certainly hope the Murray's are not going into the season solely banking on the fact that the CBA would change that.

Why is everyone so darned concerned about the floor? It's not an issue. Likely to be changed in the CBA.

Because we're 3 million under and there are no guarantees that the floor changes.

I think it will, but then again I also think Murray will still make a substantial move. It's not really about "being concerned", it's a legitimate topic to discuss in a really slow and painful off-season. If you don't want to participate, just don't open the thread.

It'll change, one way or another.

Pretty much the entire reason why the current CBA was not renewed.

The floor is rising like crazy and a lot of teams don't like it (I imagine Melnyk is one of them), the floor will soon outpace what a market like Ottawa is able to spend on salaries.

Doubt he gets claimed, so than Bingo bound? Sign him to a two way contract? Not like he's going to get any better offers elsewhere. Ironic too since he was in high demand league wide just a couple short years ago. It's time to put up or shut up for Butler and he just doesn't have a realistic shot at playing NHL minutes in Ottawa this season.

either way, seems silly to get rid of a potential asset; especially if you continue paying him. If Butler's really as bad as some would have you believe, he could easily be sent to Bingo to sit on the bench there in October. I don't see why we wouldn't give him a chance in training camp before cutting him loose... He might end up being crap in camp, but buying him out really serves no purpose...

unless, of course, we're about to sign a couple of big FAs!!!

Oh wait, they're all gone...

kdb clarified on the main board.

clubs cannot use the post-arb window only if they have just one club-elected arbitration.

we only had one arbitration, but it was player-elected, so butler can be bought out.

which means bye bye butler.
