Maybe, but imo, likely none of them were serious offers. I wouldn't offer the kind of money that would really give Philly a pause for a player who probably won't be a core player. He may turn into a good 2nd line player, but noone I would go head over heels for. Philly probably doesn't match a 5 million dollar offer sheet, but I don't think it would be a wise idea to give him 5 million and Philly draft picks ( which includes a 1st) as compensation.

Really? Voracek's already a fairly strong EV player and he's only 22. His PP productivity is a pretty good bet to improve over the next couple of years, and if that happens you have a 60 point, defensively responsible winger. If you could get him for $5 million plus first and third round picks, I think a lot of teams would look at that (especially teams who will likely be drafting in the bottom part of the first round).

That said, I think it's a good bet that Philly matches $5 million/year if they were willing to sign him at $4.2 million/year. It's unlikely they topped out what they were willing to pay to keep him around.

We can chalk this one up to another huge swing and a miss for that Hockey Insider fellow. In between his hate mongering of Darren Dreger and that Edmonton journalist, he kept saying #CONFIRMED # DONE DEAL that he was going to Pittsburgh. What a fool.

Overpayment but he doesn't handcuff the Hurricanes at all since they are so far under the cap and its only a 1 year deal. Rutherford has been antsy to get better and this will definitely help.

I would have liked us to go 1 year 7 million on Semin. At the worst, you have an uninspired player who still puts up top-6 production and you're only attached to him for the one season. More likelier scenario would be that he goes to prove that he deserves a big contract by putting up great numbers (70-80 points) and we get a head start at a possible extension. IMO, there was nothing to lose to make a signing like this. We're not doing anything else with the cap space anyways.

1 year deal at 7m, I would be all for that.

Low risk, HIGH reward

Signing Semin to that deal would have completely screwed up this team's financial situation going forward. How do we justify paying a heartless player like Semin more than the Twins? We've fostered a culture here where players take less than market value for the good of the team, and you go out to break the bank on a guy like that?

At around $5m, maybe, he'd have been worthwhile. At $7m, becoming the highest player on the team? It'd be impossible to say no fast enough.

I agree with you that he could be a 60-65 point player, but then that's essentially what you'd be paying him as. He's not there yet.

Interesting that Semin accepted a 1-year $7m offer.

Two hypotheses:

1. GMs are really wary of him, and the only offers on the table are either crap money/medium term or 1-year payday (i.e. Carolina) and he chose the 1-year payday.

OR

2. as indicated by his lack of interest in the KHL, he truly is looking for something beyond the money and Carolina seemed like the best organizational fit.

I'm not Semin's biggest fan, but #1 doesn't sound too likely to me. I think Pittsburgh and/or Detroit would have both the desire and the cap space to offer Semin at least a 2- or 3-year big money contract.

Was he that bad in Washington? I don't really know, he seems like an exciting player. 7 mil is probably an over payment but hey its Carolina and they probably have to. But Rick Nash is 7.8 and his numbers aren't that exciting either but the potential to be great in the right setting is there for both these players.

Semin makes this team a lot better. For the good of the team, the players should understand this, and understand that for players with no prior ties to the team, a discount should not be expected, nor should they be expected at all under any circumstances.

yeah, i dunno if semin is the answer to our offense but i def would've preferred this to 3+ years of doan, especially if he gets over 5.5mil.

Great deal by Hurricanes. Easily the 2nd best forward available. And at 1 year there's virtually no risk at all. Canes looking legit now.

He could do well with Staal.

But for all of the oft stated reasons, I had zero interest in him.

Don't think Gillis had much either.
