Sbisa would be our top defensive prospect right now (because we are that bad). He might not be a #1...but he's playing 3-4 as what a 22 yr old? He's got a few years of developing still to do.
4 of "our firsts" were used on d, and 3 of them are playing in the NHL. It would be nice to have that depth is all I'm saying. Carle cost us 2 firsts basically, and he's gone now. Pronger is retired...there is 4 firsts out the door, and half a year of versteeg.
We need to start paying the piper and build up our prospect depth.
I think Sbisa has less upside than Schenn and as far as prospects go our roster is littered with them.
On many teams couturier, Schenn would still be in the minors. if we hit on every draft pick we could have had carlson mdz ...others that im blanking on. Doing that will kill you. Ask any sixer fan.
Right now we , like many teams, are lacking the true number 1 defenseman. But we have 5 guys that are all top 4 capable and some young guys that have not reached their full potential.
Also we have a ton in cap space available and depth at forward. If we want to trade some of our depth im sure we can make for a good trading partner with a team like CBJ or Phoenix.

I'm not playing hindsight saying we didn't draft this guy ect, I'm saying banking 4 #1s in one player was bad. We have a bunch of #6 guy prospects and maybe #4 ceiling. Sbisa is above that.
Trading for versteeg was bad, ect.
We need to have a long term strategy with our farm....we might have been able to get weber if we had 4 first round picks sitting in the minors or on the roster...but we have zero depth...we can't absorb that kind of hit...bc it's been wasted.

You bring up some good points. I think one day we may look back at the weber thing and it may be a blessing in disguise. it is difficult to imagine what our farm system would look like without 4 first rounders.
I understood the versteeg deal at the time because he was a RFA still, and richards was basically playing by himself at times out there.
The pronger deal got us to within a avg nhl goalie's chance of a cup. I will say this though, draft picks are hit or miss. and somtimes a known quantity is better than potential.
You are damned if you damned if you don't and these things are always 20 20 hindsight.
Interview with Giroux points out something interesting...
Quote:
“Those are from (Sidney) Crosby,” he says half smiling, but with some tension in his voice. “Every time we'd line up against each other for a face-off during our (2012 playoff) series, instead of going for the puck when it was dropped, he'd hack me across the wrists. I ended up playing the series against (New) Jersey with one of them fractured and had to go for surgery on both of them after we were out of the playoffs.”
That's not to say he doesn't have any though, as one look at his hands reveals a pair of nearly symmetrical scars

This was already posted in another thread, mods can delete it if they want, we can carry the convo over there.
