Our PK Next Year

I want to know if you think it should be more aggressive (I hate the collapse ****) and what do you think about Quenneville using our top forwards on it?

Remember, The Sedins/Crosby/Malkin/Tavares/Ovechkin/Semin...etc don't spend any time on the PK. 3 of our top 4 forwards are PK specialists whereas many teams use 3rd/4th line forwards in that role. It's nice that short-handed we could be a threat but maybe it's time to hand that role to other players?

In b4 "no one else can kill penalties"

Kitchen will run it, it will be the same stupid collapsing rectangle where nobody gets covered.

Kitchen will be running the PK again so we can expect the same passive triangle + one system.

I'd like to see Toews, Hossa, Keith off the PK as much as possible, and Leddy off completely.

Yea I've posted about this a few times over the last year and a half. I don't like that all our best players(minus kane) get a ton of tough minutes on the PK all the time.

I agree Leddy should be nowhere near the PK but if you pull Keith off then Oduya has to log big minutes on the PK.

I'd rather.

Kruger, Bolland, Frolik, Toews, Hossa, Mayers should be the forwards.

Keith, Seabrook, Hammer, Brookbank the D-men.

I like that for the dmen. I prefer Montador, Leddy, and Oduya stay off the pk units.

I think the forward pairs have to include Mayers and Bolland and maybe Kruger if he improves on faceoffs. Tough to say who would be better suited if they have a new scheme this year.

I don't have a problem with our best guys killing penalties, they are good at it and it helps make the PK dangerous in terms of SH goals. Plenty of some of the best forwards in the NHL play PK minutes, Giroux, Parise, Perry, Datsyuk, just to name a few.

I don't have any problems with our best players playing on the PK. Hasn't Chicago been amoung the least penalized teams in the NHL over the past few years? I know they were last year and I'm pretty sure they were the year before aswell. As long as Chicago isn't taking alot of penalties, then there's nothing wrong with Toews, Hossa, Sharp, etc being on the PK.

As far as the system.. it'll never been an aggressive box under Kitchen. Don't worry though, he, Q and Kompon will be gone before the year is over.

Definitely, those are some elite players but most teams don't roll 4 of their 5 best forwards on the PK. I'd like to at least see Hossa get reduced PK time just in hopes he conserves more energy. Leddy too, that's why I hope Brookbank + Oduya will help a lot.

before we select players...we actually need a strategy/system in place...rather than randomly selecting players who look like they can defend and a couple of guys who can shoot.

assuming that the chances of us having a competent strategy in place are something less than zero - just tack a poster of our line up on our wall and throw some darts at it. wherever they land is the the pk i anticipate we'll have.

sky is falling, we suck - why even play the games and as Fan watch them?

Our PK will be bad as long as Kitch runs it. Having Hossa, Toews, Keith and Seabrook is good because they are good.

Seeing how you still have Kitch and nearly the same roster... I doubt much changes in the style and unit's. The major impact is Leddy should be off the PK and Oduya should be the resource 5th D-man.

I think Hossa may go the way of the Sharpe and be off, or at least down the line of the units.

Keith-Seabrook

Bolland-Shaw
Hjalmarsson-Brookbank

We can't overuse the stars. Take Hossa off PK or PP.

These are the four d-men I think should be playing PK too.

Keith's minutes should be more limitted next season, so I'd rather he be on PK and off PP. Same with Seabrook only to a lesser degree.

Use Leddy, Oduya and Montador on the PP - they're better suited for PP than PK.

If you look at Detroit, the last few years they sparingly used Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Lidstrom on the PK. We need to let the bottom 6 guys handle more of the load so guys like Toews and Hossa can focus more on even strength + PP.

yep, and have more left in the tank to start the playoffs.

I have to imagine they'll try some new things given how it went last year on the PK. And with Hoss coming in dinged up and a year older, limiting his PK time would be nice. I think Shaw should get a good look on the PK to see if he can eat up some of those minutes.

And hasn't Detroit had one of the worst PK's over the past few years?

YES!!!

I've been *****ing about this for years, but Q has let this team get to lackadaisical on the PK. There is very little team wide pressure on the puck (occasionally a guy like Bolland goes hard but the philosophy doesn't work unless EVERYONE is doing it). With the personnel and skill we have on this team there is no reason why we can't be a top 10 unit. 13-16 at the very worst.

10/11 17th overall
09/10 10th overall

Their PK percentage went down since then too
