Ken Holland- F

Did nothing to prepare us for losing Lidstrom. Was not aggressive enough at getting Suter. Set pipedreams such as Rick Nash and Shane Doan as higher prioities over more realistic and attainable signings like Alex Syomin. Has once again clogged our forward corps with aging veterans and has made it utterly impossible for the kids to take over sans some dump off trades.

Stan Bowman......give him a ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, as asleep @ the wheel.

K Holland............give him a ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ as asleep @ the Helm. Wait, that was a good signing.

Seriously, Chi has shown absolutely no improvement this summer yet,

Get rid of Frolik, Montador (Oduya, but not happening) for whatever return is avail., or AHL bound for more of Wirtz throwaway cash.

Then offer to Rozival 4.0x3, Arnott 3.0 x 1 and Kostitsyn 4.0 x 3, or 4.5 x 2.

Next step, is to pay a good price for Bernier as in a couple of decent prospects like Morin/Beach/Danault/Kruger.

Keep Hjalmarsson and monitor through to season midway and decide then.

Really wanted to give him an F but he signed Tavares, Okposo and Grabner to steals of extensions so I can't complain. Hated the Rolston move (clear cap circumvention).

I'd give Regier a B.
- Signed Ehrhoff to a cap friendly deal
- Signed Myers long-term before reaching RFA status (to a steal of a cap hit if he reaches his potential)
- Traded for Regehr, without dealing anything important
- Acquired Hodgson
- Got a 1st for Paul freaking Gaustad (and a 4th)
- Drafted Grigorenko, and traded up to also draft Girgensons
- Probably lost value-wise on the Roy deal, but ultimately got a deal that changes team culture and makes us tougher to play against
- Swung and missed on a few UFAs this summer
- Could've done better at getting veteran AHL talent for Rochester

In general, he's been very aggressive about filling team needs and has set the team up very well to succeed in the future, building from the center position out up front, and well stocked on D.

Agreed, could go up a notch or could go down a notch depending on what happens between now and the fall.

Although I wasn't clear on the time period this grade applies to. Are we talking Calendar year of 2011? July 1 2011 to July 1 2012? Sept 1st 2011 to Sept 1st 2012? I'd like to be more specific. Why grade someone for half an offseason?

Chiarelli - B-

Extended Thornton, Boychuk and Paille
Added G depth in Subban and Svedberg
Extended Julien (kind of a given)
Cleaned house in Providence

Wasn't a big fan of the draft outside of Subban and Griffith and not much action in free agency but we still have a good team.

Bob Murray C-

Overpaying for Bryan Allen & Souray
Straining the relationship between Bobby Ryan
Has thus far failed to provide Bobby with a #2 center

Boy most of you are very generous! I wish I had had you as teachers.
If you start with the premise that C is average then I think that most GM's have done a fairly average job.

Re-signed Price
Overpaid, but got a necessity in Prust
Took a chance on Armstrong. Low level chance at a lost, good chance as a reward
Drafted Galchenyuk (though 3rd overall SHOULD land you a player that looks promising a month after the draft.)
Drafted what looks to be a great crop.

Signed Bouillon at 1 year at 1.5, instead of going after a guy like Carkner at the same price, but 2 more years to be a bottom pair dman....
Didn't draft, or even sign a goalie prospect...

Undecided - The new contract/ trade of PK Subban.
The signing, or not signing of Shane Doan.

Consider who our last GM was, this is an A+++++++++++ Realistically, I'd give it a B.

Greg Sherman should get a C, sure he signed PAP but he didn't do anything to get EJ a top pairing partner.

I like Rutherford's moves:

Top six looks solid, Bottom six is not bad with some upside. If he adds a defenseman and player like Dominic Moore, could be really good.

Rutherford: A+ -got J.staal, which can be a top 2 center. Signed Semin to reasonable contract
At least give Homer a C+ for not only keeping things interesting with Weber, but also managing to get Jake signed before any other GMs could revenge-offersheet him.

Fletcher - A+

Signed Granlund, added Dumba to a dynamic group of prospects, added a solid 4th line center, brought in a good friend to Seto and a decent depth forward, nabbed the two biggest free agents (one at a bit of a discount) on the market, and didn't lose anyone.

Agreed. I'll give Gillis a B- or C+, not that I have any complaints but he's had a really low key off season so far. Reserve the big grades for teams like Minnesota that actually accomplished something big, not for simply towing the status quo.

Good:
Signing Garrison to a good contract (compared to Wideman or Carle)
Getting Schneider signed on a multi-year deal

Bad:
Lost Sami Salo, not much to be done here when Tampa offered so much but it still hurt.

Pending:
Luongo trade
Doan's decision
Any other trade

Most GM's can get a grade at this point but Gillis usually pulls some late moves, such as the Ehrhoff and Booth trades. So something's going to go down before/if the season starts.

I give Shero a B+. While he didn't add an impact player. He...

1. Traded a 2012 7th round pick for the UFA rights to arguably the best goalie on the free agent market, then signed him to a 2 year deal.

2. Traded Jordan Staal (with one year left on his contract who just turned down a long term extension because he wouldn't be able to play with his brother) to his brother's team, the Carolina Hurricanes for Brandon Sutter, Brian Dumoulin and the 8th overall pick (Derrick Pouliot)

3. Traded Zbynek Michalek as a cap dump, for a prospect he really likes, plus a 3rd round pick, cleared cap space to go after Parise and Suter, didn't get them, but he tried. He has Simon Despres who is ready for the NHL, to replace Michalek.

4. Replaced Arron Asham with Tanner Glass, a bigger, more physical 4th line winger who fights, kills penalties and is not afraid to hit (top 10 in hits last season).

5. Added better depth for the Penguins. Over the past 2 seasons, the Penguins AHL depth signings were C Ryan Craig, D Andrew Hutchinson, C Jason Williams, RW Colin McDonald, D Alexandre Picard G Scott Munroe, etc. He added depth that can help the prospects in WBS, while contributing at both the AHL and NHL level.

F Riley Holzapfel
G Jeff Zatkoff
C Warren Peters
C Philippe Dupuis
C Trevor Smith
RW Benn Ferriero
D Dylan Reese
don't forget he resigned that Crosby guy long term for the same cap hit

Good:
Traded Schenn for VanReimsdyk, which at first glance is a good move
Signed Jay McClement for 1.5. Underrated move for the Leafs. Help a struggling PK, give leafs two defensively minded Cs for the bottom-6, keeps Steckel in a lesser role, gives Carlyle the option of a checking, shutdown line, all for cheap.
Signed Keith Aucoin, Mike Kostka. Good moves to keep Marlies a strong team.
Re-signed Kulemin for 2.8. Fair.
Hasn't sacrificed youth for aging goaltending. Yet.
mORRgan Rielly.

Bad:
Grabovski for 5.5 a year. Horrendous contract that will come back to haunt team.
No bonafide 1st line center, although none were really available so it is hard to put fault on him for that.
Buyout Armstrong when team has cap space and is lacking in size and physicality in bottom 6.
Not buying out Lombardi instead who has a similar cap hit, and has no role on team.
Shaky goaltending once again, although no cheap options out there so there isn't much to do about it.

Greg Sherman

In: Semyon Varlamov, JS Giguere, Steve Downie, PA Parenteau, Jamie McGinn, Jan Hejda, Shane O'Brien, Greg Zanon, John Mitchell, Chuck Kobasew

Out: Brian Elliott, Peter Budaj, Tomas Fleischmann, Jay McClement, Peter Mueller, JM Liles, Kyle Quincey, Kevin Porter, Daniel Winnik, Brandon Yip, T.J. Galiardi, 1st Round 2012, 2nd Round 2012

Probably a "B" overall. He's added some nice depth to an Avalanche team devoid of NHL caliber players at the end of 2010-2011, which almost put them in a playoff spot in 2011-2012.

Mike Gillis:

B-/B

Pros:
1. Jason Garrison
2. Knows the team needs to get better and has considered Nash, Doan, and Weber.
3. Re-signed Schneider
4. Is being patient with Luongo deal until he gets something that improves our team.
5. Letting Rome go!

Cons.
1. Justin Schultz
2. Sami Salo- This one is disappointing. Even if Gillis didn't feel comfortable with the 2 years, Salo has done enough for the organization to warrant matching the TB contract for Salo.
3. Re-signed Raymond for some unknown reason? Raymond represents settling for mediocrity.

He deserves better than a C. The only first pairing defenseman on the market was Suter and the Avs were not going to win that auction.

No other first pairing defenseman has been traded this offseason, in fact, very few defenseman in general have been traded recently. Teams are hoarding defenseman.
