Does anyone remember how great we thought we did in the 2008 draft? This was the first draft of the rebuild and I remember thinking we really did it "right." Took the gamble on the right players, etc.

With Schenn gone, MacWilliam is now the only one left. Thought it was interesting.

Luke Schenn
Jimmy Hayes
Mikhail Stefanovich
Greg Pateryn
Joel Champagne
Jerome Flaake
Grant Rollheiser
Andrew MacWilliam

Shortest one was 6'2"?

Just goes to show you how much of a crapshoot the draft is. Things can completely change in a span of 4 years.

Turned out to be a fairly top heavy draft year in retrospect.

Not surprised. Pretty much everything Gramps touched turned to crap.

Think of it this way...the 2008 draft built our team to what it is now and will be.
Luke Schenn got us JVR
Jimmy Hayes got us Bradley Ross (Ross is gonna get his chance at pro this year)
Pateryn got us Grabovski

But as for the rest of them, that`s what we get for having one of the highest paid scouting staffs managed by Fletcher (at the time).

The 2008 draft overall was really top heavy and just about a complete loss after the first 2 rounds (with the exceptions of Holtby, Lindback, a select few others and anyone Detroit drafts)

Maybe we should trade our 1st in 2013.

That wasn't the start of our rebuild, and it's not as if all players drafted were terrible. They were just traded for other players.

I'd say it turned out pretty much as expected. Schenn was the only sure fire thing. Hayes was projected as a long term project (similar to Colborne) with likely 2nd line PF ability (which seems to be where he is headed). Stefanovich was a Kovalev type, not in skill level, but a guy who had offensive potential with suspect ethic, not considered by any means as having a solid shot at the NHL. The rest were pure questions.

I remember Pierre McGuire absolutely sh*ting himself when we drafted Schenn. No prospect is ever going to be a guaranteed player. For all we know, Rielly could be the biggest bust in the draft even though we all have faith in the kid. This is why I try to never listen to predictions or projections.

Nothing wrong with Schenn - he had a softmore slump - got discouraged with the team/coaching staff - then they brought in Dion and that was the straw that broke the camels back. He'll be a terrific player in Philly for years.

let them play first.

Yakupov could bust, Rielly could be a pile of garbage. Who knows. Let it happen?

I'm surprised but I'm also not surprised at the same time. I'm surprised because that draft was very recent. Usually you end up holding onto more prospects for longer. But at the same time I'm not surprised because Burke didn't draft these players and quite often a new gm will trade away the former prospects for players they want instead.

People were happy with this draft because we picked the BPA with each pick.

Happens all the time, but rarely works out.

Montreal apparently had an amazing draft picking up kids who dropped at each of their picks. We'll see how those guys look 5 years down the road.
