Maximum dollars doesn't concern me in the slightest. Maximum years is the relevant issue. For a one year contract, he could have anything that would fit under the cap without having to get rid of any non-Gomez players.

If Markov is healthy, give him what he wants and dump Gomez. If he's going just for money, he won't sign with Montreal because of taxes. We can't match.

I would be fine with all the amounts listed in this poll, if the contract length was 1 to 2 years max. Otherwise it could end up handcuffing the team as we have a lot of young players/prospects who might very well reach and surpass their potential and hence ask for a much bigger piece of the pie than they have right now. Ideally, I also want to keep Price, Plekanec & Markov for as long as possible.

The question is really what's the point in getting 35 (soon to be 36) years old Doan if it ends up costing us a chunk of core in the future?

Whatever he wants, it ain't mine to give.

And to the bean counters out there, it ain't yours either.

2 years @ 5.5m only way. Valuable asset, but you will pay the price if you over pay within the next few years with the likes of Deharnais and Pacioretty coming up for contracts after this season, while you still have Gionta, Gomez, Kaberle as the main contracts on the books that expire the year after.

Nothing even close to what he wants, so forget it.

If giving Doan $7.5M means Gomez is sent to Hamilton... sign him up, now!

So 12 per on a 12 year deal sounds good?

For Doan 3 years at 5, only because we have number of good RWers coming up.

Now if we can get rid of 2 out of the 3 lousy contracts we all know about.... Maybe 3 6 million

That what Doan at 4 @ 7.5 million which is "rumored" is not a fit for us no matter how much we want him.
nope...

I understand those who said that they don't want to sign Doan because we're far from challenging and this just ruins our draft position next year. I get it. But why do you think we won't challenge? What were our problems last year?

We missed grit and size - Prust, Armstrong and to an extent Boullion offer that. Doan would too.
We miss a top 6 winger with size - Doan would be that guy.
We're missing a third pairing defenseman with size and power - we're still missing that.
We're missing size down the middle - we've Galchenyuk and, even though he's not our #1 center next year, he's in our system now.

With four signings, we would contend. I don't really see the hole in the lineup that prevents us from challenging. It's a new season starting October. Yes the Rangers beefed up, the Penguins are great. We won't win the Cup. Our size down the middle is still lacking until Galchenyuk is ready. But do you not cover your holes when you have an opportunity to?

Going into this off-season, I hoped that we'd get a big center, grit and more beef on the backend. We addressed most of that. If we sign Doan, I don't see how with a clean slate we're not at least in the top 6 in the conference.

Doan and his agent know that this is very likely his last contract with the NHL. He's looking for the biggest payday possible, and it looks as though Montreal is willing to compete. I say throw a big signing bonus at him. 2 years would be ideal, 3 years more realistic.

I don't care about the amount. But I'd not sign him for longer than 2 years.

Also, I don't think we're one Doan away from being a good team, and I think this would be a useless move.

Sure, clown, tank in your dreams. Anyway, it would be irrational for the Habs to pay that much for someone who isn't a superstar (not to mention Doan's advanced age).

I wouldn't pay that much for a 35-year-old Bob Gainey.

Agreed,a player whose intangibles outweigh any other player in the NHL,if Bergevin,Dudley and Co. say he's their man I'm all on board for signing him too.

$6 million on a 1-2 year deal or I would walk away.

I'd give him Gomez money for up to 3 years. I'd offer him 22.5/3 years. This would necessitate burying gomez in the minors, which would be a double win.

Doan doesn't just bring the points but he brings a gritty veteran leadership up front that the habs have been lacking but are shoring up with recent moves. I also think he has the disposition and tenure in the league to deal with the fishbowl of Habdom with relative ease.

The good thing about Doan is (correct me if im wrong) that hes pretty much never had any signifigant injuries...Mark recchi...Messier....are examples of guys who played over 40 with similar games per year numbers.....Not to compare doan to either one of them skillwise ...thats not the point im trying to make...but he could play healthy into his 40s

Something like, 7, 6, 4, 3, might get it done if he wants to
play in Montreal. And unless he really wants to play here, we're
not getting him anyway.

at his age, to me he's worth about 4-4.5 million a year. 7.5/yr is ridiculous.

i like the guy but he's asking way too much. he prolly wont score more points than pleks. he should get paid erik cole kind of money.

I'd go as far as a cap hit of 5M$ for 3 years. 6,5 M$/1st year, 5,5 M$ /2nd year, 3 M$ 3rd year. Only way you'd have him in Montreal. I know, I'm overpaying him....it's UFA time.

We might not be 1 Doan away....but you start with Doan, on top of what you have, and you can make some adjustments along the way. He will help you in any way you want. Even at that age. Maybe less in the 3rd year, who cares....it only exist to get him. We are a much better team with him. Might not be 1 Doan away, but you get him....and you make other players better....
