Shero made an awful move. He dumped Michalek for nothing but kept a more expensive, worse D in Martin. I guess he assumed he was gonna get Suter?

Rangers would've paid more for Michalek than what PHX did just saying... but whatever.

this doesn't make sense. they had a top 4 stay at home d-men and they traded him for peanuts... I doubt they want another one.

edit: and I really really doubt Shero dealt Z because he knew he's going to get Suter. Shero doesn't really strike me as the naive kind.

Martin. Fits our system better than michalek surprisingly. He's more of a candidate for a bounce back year than michalek. Martin was the whipping boy for whatever reason.

I don't know what the story on Michalek is.

I know he was a solid player in Phoenix, and was solid in his first year in Pittsburgh, he just didn't play the shutdown role he was brought in to do. He's not physical, and there was a rumor that Michalek wasn't happy with his role here.

I don't know if Shero traded him because he didn't want him, or if he asked for a trade back to Phoenix? I don't know.

But why did you dump Michalek for peanuts? He's a solid player, a real good player. You could've got alot more from other teams, Rangers being one of them.

We got Girardi, Stralman and Bickel on the right side... Michalek would be real nice to have. But oh well, capdump a good player is good I guess

What? That's not true at all, Martin is an AWFUL fit in our system. Michalek was at least able to be a boss penalty killer.

Sabres have like 8 NHL ready D men and can afford to give one up, Kennedy could help them fill their 3rd line winger spot in which Tropp is not ready for yet and kaleta isnt good enough for.

Penguins get a guy who can play on the second D pairing who has a friendly cap hit.
Done if the pick is in 2014.

NTC. I don't think Shero views Ruopp and a 3rd as "peanuts".

Why would he trade Michalek within the division anyways, especially to the team that finished #1 in the Eastern Conference? Not to mention that you don't know if the Rangers would have given more, maybe the Rangers GM didn't want him?

Ridiculous idea given the defensive depth the Pens have in the system and that they are going to be losing NHL calibre defensemen like Strait and Bortuzzo (not top four defensemen by any stretch, but that is not the point) yearly for nothing because there is no room for them and they are out of options. The Pens have a ton of potential top four quality defensemen that will be coming of age year after year for years to come. Not all will make it but given the numbers enough certainly will. Where will they go when the time comes?

That said I will grant that Shero likely shares this silly notion, and would have a team entirely of PMD if he had a chance to ice one.

Hopefully, the Pens will be moving Despres into the lineup this year and calling it a day.

Well why not? Better return, and it seems like you viewed him as an ok D nothing else. So what are you afraid of?

And for the bolded part. Yes I do know what the GM of Rangers wants, since I am Howson .

I bet you be like right about now. It's alright young grasshopper! We will just stick with Stu mofo Bickel!

Fast forward to 0:27

Like I've said before, you really can't consider Michalek a shutdown NHL defenseman. He can play that shutdwon role in the proper system, but he can't go to any team and be a shutdwon defenseman. He's not physical, he gets beat by the forward on a dump in, his skating is questionable.

He's a good player, he's just not the shutdown defenseman the Pens look for. If they want a shutdown defenseman, they will look for guys like Orpik. Simon Despres is a pretty physical two way defenseman who is a good positional player.

We don't need a 3rd line wing, we need a 3rd line C. This trade is awful for Buffalo -- does nothing to make us better or fill holes.

Above average positioning, below average foot-speed, blocks a ton of shots but because of that tends to get ankle injuries which hampers his speed even more. Can go through phases where he plays the puck like a grenade, but is mostly reliable.

He hits like a freight train, people literally just bounce off him and goes through them without losing any momentum. He can also drop the gloves if need be. He is a solid if unremarkable #4, a good minute eater.

How about a trade centering around Sekera and Briere?

edit: For some reason I saw Philly in the OP

A+. At least this sounds like a trade that is good for Pittburgh.

I think Murray's declining speed could be an issue here, and it might leave him on the third pairing. I like him, but I think this would be a move that would be done a bit into the season after the Pens see how things end up with their younger guys. Like, if Despres ends up playing with Letang and Dustin Jeffrey is healthy and pushing for a spot on the third line, maybe they look at moving Kennedy for Murray.

A Murray-Engelland third pairing would be pretty ridiculous.

Murray would be a nice physical player to have but dont think he really fills the top 4 need. I think he would be a good bottom pairing guy to play like 12-15 minutes
