Dion Phaneuf's next contract?

Dion has 2 years @ 6.5M left on his contract. Do you think he will remain a Toronto Maple Leaf, and if so what would his next contract be? I think we can all agree that there is NO way he gets 6.5M again. He is now 27 so if another 5 year contract was awarded he would 32.

What do you think is a fair # for Dion, and how many years.

If he stays (and he most likely will) I think 4.5M tops @ 3-5 years.

What you guys think?

4.5 lol, in world where Wideman and Wisniewski get crazy money? He will get at least his 6.5. I would say 7.2 or something along there.

5 years $25 million sounds about right to me. Guys like him don't grow on trees.

If his play is the same as last season for the next two seasons id give him a 5-6 year deal for 5.75-6.25 mil a year no problems.

Really? No way I pay him anywhere close to 6.5M let alone 7.2M.

If his play is good, I would go 5M @ 5 years.

He has the ability to be a stud, just rather inconsistent. I think this can be attributed to having to play every situation with very little support from teammates. A lot can happen in 2 years.

LOL at 4.5. Do you realize how much Wideman just received?

There is no way hes going to get anything lower then 6mil as long as his play stays the same.

I agree with your post.

BUT, just because Wideman was awarded a "bad" contract, that does not mean the Leafs have to follow suit.

Certainly not, Phaneuf on that deal would be a steal.

I don't see the cap hit being lower than the one on his current contract.

6.5 is actually pretty good for Phaneuf. Offensive defenceman that hits and plays on the PK (albeit a bad PK). In a league where Wisniewski, Wideman, Carle, Campbell, Boyle, Karlsson, and Green get 5-7 million to be strictly offensive defencemen and nothing else...Phaneuf fits around 6-6.5 million again.

I would love it if Burke re-signed him at 6M for 5 years and wouldn't mind if it was 6.5 again either.

Erik Karlsson @ 6.5M is right on! That guy is a stud. Way more skilled that any of the other D in your post. Phaneuf is not in the same league as him.

That was Karlsson's second contract. This would be Phaneuf's UFA contract. Apples and Oranges.

More skilled offensively. He is not that good in his own zone, and plays very minimal PK time. Dion is out there the whole 2 minutes it seems like some kills. Karlsson doesn't nearly have as important role on the Sens that Phaneuf with the leafs.

I don't care so much about money, but term. Needs to be locked up long term for sure. For me 8 years at 6.8 would be fitting.

7 years at 6.5 for Karlsson is actually a discount. He could have demanded 7.5 like Stamkos after the season he had. You also got to realize with the cap raising every year that contracts will begin to inflate as well. Ex. 4th liners at 1-2M rather than 500-750k, 3rd liners at 2M-3M etc.

OP is taking into account 50% reduction of the cap and roll-back of player salaries

Karlsson is also only 22. He will develop defensively.

His skill does not come around everyday.
