There is no way Subban or Gorges get dealt... but they are the only Habs D-men that might interest Pittsburgh.

I don't think Pittsburgh is in as much trouble as people think. At the end of last year no one was playing responsible defensively. Some coaching adjustments and a full summer with everyone healthy will do wonders for the team. Let me repeat, everyone is healthy. Imagine what could be accomplished with a full off season for Malkin, Crosby and Orpik alone. To top it off there are a lot of prospects that are ready to be NHL tested. Will they dazzle everybody right at the start of the season? Probably not. Will they eventually develop into a decent player at their respective position with room to grow? Most likely yes. If **** hits the fan and these guys do terribly, then at least we'll know, and we can deal with it then.

We do not need a top 4 defenseman. If we had, we wouldn't have dealt Michalek.

We'd only be acquiring a defenseman at this point if he represented a significant upgrade on Michalek, ie Suter. If not, we have the pool to fill the top 4 from within.

This.

I expect Despres to have a top 4 role on the team this year. But young defensemen can be unpredictable.

and u likely will score goals in bunches again, but that philly series had to be pretty scary defensively, and losing michaelek too? Pitt will be fine though

Michalek's big selling point coming in 2 years ago was his PK ability. It's been fine in the regular season, but last year our PK was the worst in the playoffs, and the year before it was 2nd worst.

We needed to shake things up. It simply wasn't working as is.

Let's say that Ray decides he would like to add another top-4 d-man for insurance purposes. Would something like this work for Pittsburgh?

To

D Jordan Leopold ($3M UFA)

To

C Dustin Jeffrey ($575K RFA)
2013 3rd RND pick

Without any rookies, these are the guys who would form Pittsburgh's top4: Letang, Orpik, Martin, Niskanen. So even assuming that everything else goes to hell in a handbasket, please stop offering defenders who are not any sort of upgrade over Martin or Nisky. Kthnx.

I also think that unless there is a steal to be made, veteran D would rather be added closer to the deadline after we have seen what Despres and Co can do.

Ballard would look great in a Pitts uniform. I think if you guys could get him when his value is low, he'd be a great pickup.

I am a huge Ballard fan, and I think Gillis is avoiding trading him when his stock is lowest which is good because I think he can hold a lot of value down the line.

Anyway, it's a possibility Shero ought to look at. Van needs some depth up front and a bottom 2 d-man, so I'm sure something could be worked out.

Assuming Pittsburgh signs another winger, I could get behind TK for Murray.

Michalek was part of the problem...people don't seem to be getting that. He's a solid defenseman and I expect he'll be great in Phoenix...but he was a horrible fit in Pittsburgh and it was painfully obvious.

Did you watch any of our games? Martin in no way, shape, or form fits our system. As a matter of fact... He may be the worst defenseman in the NHL for our system.

What was the point in ridding a top 4 D they already had?

I like Murray, but if Michalek didn't fit the system because of his skating, not sure how Murray would fit. He is everything else I'd want - another physical guy, shot blocker.

And Kennedy...not that I think he's an answer for the Pens top 6, but he gets hated on in Pittsburgh. If we had a huge surplus of top 6 wings, and could slide down Dupuis down to the 3rd line to replace TK, then move him. As of now, Dupuis is nearly guaranteed to start the year next to Crosby.

God no

We already have Paul Martin...assuming the top pair is Orpik - Letang, a pairing of Leopold - Martin would get feasted on by cycling lines.

Like some have said, the Pens don't need a top 4 defenseman. Michalek didn't fit in so we traded him.

Pens believe Despres is ready for the NHL as a top 4 defenseman and believe Niskanen is a #4.

Despres-Letang
Orpik-Niskanen
