They tried it a number of years ago... (2001-02?) I recall a much wussier horn, too. And they gave it up after a game or two.
Our goal song is definitely classic, I for one hope that it's never changed.
As far as the actual horn goes, I think we are one of the last teams in the league to not have an actual goal horn installed, our horn is just a sound file that Ray Castoldi plays over the Garden sound system, which could explain why it lacks the punch that some of the other goal horns in the league have.
I wouldn't be totally opposed to having an actual horn put in place so long as it's not lame or obnoxious.
If you talk to a lot of the so called "Old Timers" that go the the Rangers games many don,t care for the goal song. It has been around for almost 20 years and like the Potvin Sucks chant will probably be around forever. It took me a long time to warm up to the song but I have to agree that many of the fans would be in an uproar if the Rangers tried to change it.

I agree...when you compare our horn to a lot of the others ours isn't nearly as punchy or ear bleedingly loud and obnoxious as a lot of the other arenas. I wouldn't be opposed to keeping the same sound but cranking it up a bit. Not sure how easy it is to get the same sound from an actual horn.
I hope the Rangers move to a new goal song this year.
Not happening.
What planet are you from?
Best memories of 2012 -- signing the Goal Song with other Ranger fans at the Winter Classic and at Game 3 in the Meadowlands.
BTW -- the "horn" is reputed to be a New York Fire engine siren of some type. I remember this being talked about many years ago. It ain't changing - in fact other teams have copied it.
You would be right at home here in Phoenix where the Coyotes goals song is a lift from NHL 12. Just brutal.

I agree that would make the most sense...but have we actually seen anything in writing confirming the equipment/system is going to be replaced? I can't remember.

Yeah, it was confirmed, but I don't remember where.
I'll try looking for it now.
Or, I believe it was confirmed. I'm trying to look, but now I don't see anything.
But I was told that the reason the Rangers can't get back to the SC is that they need to improve their goal song. Until I see the team reach the top level I continue to dwell on the absurd possibility that the statement merits some truth.
I remember this as well, except I think it was a little farther back.
1997-98 rings a bell for me because that was the first season after the Messier divorce, and Leetch being named Captain.
The home/season opener I believe was vs. Philly. They lost, and the goal horn sounded like a freight train whistle.
As you mentioned it didn't go over well at all.
They hanged the horn in 2001 in trubute to the FDNY heroes of 9-11. The horn was a fire engine horn for one year. They then went back to the current one. I like the horn in that it does not drown out the fans. These super loud horns are annoting, like NJ. They stole the Hey, you suck from Nashville.
NJ's horn isn't that bad, it's the Islanders horn that's just terrible. You can't even hear yourself think when they blast it.
The "hey you suck" thing in Jersey is stupid though it is catchy. It's hilarious when they score an empty netter and chant hey you suck. Who are you chanting you suck to, the empty net that didn't stop the puck?
Interesting that some teams actually have different goal songs for different players (Caps.) I did not know that.
I just went along this blog and it's really cool ..
In TV you don't really get this NYR Goalhorn that exactly..
In NHL 12 - the NYR goal horn sounds exactly as Detroits horn (and is quite boring) ... yes I know.. it's just an EA Game
I am really curious what will be done within this renovations at the MSG ..
Someone posted that the Rangers will get a new scoreboard .. is it really that old?

I think the Devil's old horn at the Meadowlands sound better than their current one.
When they chant "hey you suck" on an empty net goal is probably directed towards the opposing team.
