+1 on that. 2 years is the max I would want to commit to. Seems like every player now wants guaranteed money to exceed their expected productive on-ice career. Wish I could be so lucky. But I do think someone who has missed out on a wish list player will pony up.

Doan may be asking for that, but I doubt he gets it. Asking price =/= getting price.

It's not just $7.5M for Shane Doan to come play for your team, it's $7.5M for Shane Doan to leave the Coyotes to come play for your team. He either gets to finish his career with the Coyotes which he would love to do... or he gets a HUGE payday, win-win for Doan and a justifiable reason for ridiculous demands.

These are the remaining FA targets I could see us getting before the season:

Forwards:

Tomas Holmstrom - Low years remaining so small contract would be doable and if he gets the scoring touch back...could pay off major dividends. Especially helpful in front of the net.

Andrew Brunette - Low years remaining so small contract would be doable. He can generate some offense and has a little speed still left. He didn't have the best season last year but if he turns it around he could be a 40-50 pointer easily. Has played with the Preds before!

Petr Sykora - Same as others with contract. Can generate scoring touch and potential for us. Would be great for the 2nd line and give us a little veteran presence.

Jason Arnott - Don't think this will ever happen again but could eat minutes and do some work on one of our lines. However he might have to be told this locker room is not his anymore. Maybe better to stay away from though.

Defense:

Carlo Colaiacovo - Can move the puck, solid D-man would be good for eating minutes and could possibly be Webers partner on the first pairing. Would definitely be able to be signed for 2-3 years as he's only 29.

Pavel Kubina - Used to be better offensively, definitely showing some age. A big guy, could eat some minutes and who knows, maybe he'll find new life in those legs.

Michal Rozsival - If you can keep this one healthy he should give you a good season.

Well, these are the ones that I could see us getting. I personally think we pick up 1 more forward and another D-man. I can't see much other than the ones listed here as being that helpful though. Most of those listed here may be looking for places to make "one last run" or may just be retiring. You wait too late and you're stuck with scraps and leftovers.

doan will get bigger offers than that elsewhere, but if he comes here it will not be for the money, it will be because he wants to play here, so as long as we are in the ballpark with what other teams offer that will probably work.

I just wonder if he wouldn't go East to not be in direct competition with Phoenix..

For Doan? 4x5 at this point since we're low on the cap you front load it like Web contract. And in a couple years you have a consistent player for cheap

Year 1 - 7mil
Year 2 - 6mil
Year 3 - 5mil
Year 4 - 2mil

Then grab Colaiacovo at 3x3mil

Yeah, but do we have the cash for that?

I still see some big eastern team like Philly (who needs someone to sooth the summer of their discontent) or the Rangers (who have the $$$'s and are selling the team as SCF favorites) paying his rediculous price. Especially now, he's the only decent forward left - he's going to cash in.

And that's the issue. Free agents are all grossly overpaid because some team is desperate enough to overpay and supply is limited.

So we can't have it both ways.. If we want a good free agent, we will have to overpay. If we don't want to overpay, then don't complain when we don't sign free agents

With Doan, I don't mind paying big for two years. Four years for a player that old carries inherent risk.

While this is true, if Shane Doan really wants to get out of Phoenix if their ownership situation doesn't stabilize then he won't have nearly as much leverage. He could end up pricing himself off of every other team, and then be stuck in Phoenix where anything can happen. Paying a guy that much money, which cannot be taken off of your cap if he gets hurt, for that amount of years is stupid, even for teams that can afford it without blinking.

Doan's agent is saying they never demanded $7.5. We'll see...

term, salary, bonuses are all that have to be agreed upon.. no type of movement clause carries over to a team matching.
