Enough with this ********. Phaneuf's top linemate last year was Gunnarsson. You know, the one guy on our team right now that you can rely on for sound defense.
OK, I think were done here if your going to start making things up. Gunnarsson has made the same mistakes you blast Phaneuf for, while playing ~4 minutes less a game. Also, a -9 compared to Phaneuf's -10. Having consistent standards is a more genuine way to argue points, instead of shifting them whenever they suit an argument.

3X6.5 is the most realistic option
Dion won't resign for less than 6 mil.

Gunnarsson is our best defensive player. I don't think many people would disagree with that. His blunders are far less frequent, and his salary makes them far more acceptable. You do realize that he gets paid one fifth of what Phaneuf gets, right? ONE FIFTH.

Phaneuf will make 6m at least on his next contract. Wouldn't be surprised at all to see Phaneuf and Kessel both sign identical 6.5m per over 5 year contracts.

If you think Gunnarsson is still going to make the same salary, you're going to have a bad time. Gunnarrsson will make about 5mil if he continues his pay. Then Phaneuf is paid 1mil more because of his physicality.

Dion's offense might have something to do with it.

Do you think Calgary would give away a D man like him...for so little just to be nice to the Leafs? They were happy to be rid of him. Addition by subtraction.

He is a legend......in his own mind!

He is not a number one d -man. He is a horrible team mate and we made him captain..... Burke is to blame...in his haste to put a face on the franchise he put the "C" on Dion.....

Dion never makes a mistake....just ask him....he blames others all the time!

He'll get at least 5 years, likely more on the open market.

And just how is it exactly 'underrating' when most people on here are looking to sign him to essentially the same contract, or up to as much as $7mil/year? That contract is one of the worst in the entire league. 7mil caphit would be half a million less than it took to sign Suter for THIRTEEN YEARS.
I doubt Phaneuf signs a cap circumvention contract with the Leafs.

Phaneuf will make $6 million minimum - if not here, somewhere else.

In that case, does that mean Doug Gilmour was garbage since Calgary asked for so little in exchange for him?

Not only don't you make sense, but then you make up crap like "he's a horrible team mate" like you have a clue what goes on in the dressing room. Just stop posting.

Just Wow! There is not a GM in the NHL that would pay him that. I don't care what anyone says.

Maybe you don't know that Phaneuf was rated the most overrated player in the NHL by the players at the all-star game.

Your post is 100% on the money.

It is just the few Burke supporters in here that rank him so high.

No way he gets 6.5M on the open market. I don't care what moose claims he knows. BS!

You are right but I have talked to a few people in the know, and they stated he is a terrible team mate and one of the reasons that high profile ufa's won't sign here. Apparently Dion is hated.

Do not assume that I don't have a clue what is going on in the dressing room or what did go on.

Gilmour trade was a great trade for us.....but we gave up real pieces that did not pan out ...a former 50 goal scorer who was young was the main piece going back to Calgary.

You also may not be aware of why the trade happened in the first place. My memory of what happened Gilmour in Calgary besides a contract squabble was that he felt disrespected by the Flames. His arbitration case with Calgary considered to be one of the more volatile cases ever. I seem to recall hearing that Gilmour was almost in tears after the Flames ripped him to shreds at his arbitration hearing.

He demand a trade and made it public so Calgary was not dealing from a position of strength.....same as Nash this year....hence the low return.

Edit: Gilmour also walked out mid season and left the team, so it only further tied the hands of the flames GM at the time...Doug Risebrough I believe.

Dion will sign a contract where he's a leaf until he retires

It will be North of 6mil per year, probably closer to 7
