the sad thing is even if he stays in Phoenix WE will still end up paying a portion of his salary...DAMN equalization payments and us having to support welfare teams.

Years ago, when the canadian dollar got you 62-63 US cents alot of canadian teams were in trouble. The Habs wernt in big trouble but the Molson company had basically a self imposed cap at around $ 40M because at that point they were losing a few million. This put us in the middle of NHL pack in terms of payroll, but far from the $ 65-75M the Flyers, Blues, Leafs, Rangers, etc were spending. I believe the NHL had some kind of very limited help for canadian clubs.
IF managment doesn't plan on making any more moves.
I'll offer Doan 1 year 8-9M.
I know it sounds dumb, but we have 7.4M in cap with only Subban not signed, so that is 22/23 rosters spots filled.
Say Subban gets around 4M on a short term deal, that gives use about 3.4M with a full roster. No matter the price, If we sign Doan, bye bye Gomez, so that 3.4M is actually 10.7M in cap space with 22 out of 23 spots filled.
Just offer 8M to Doan for 1 year only. Still gives you about 2.4M+ in case a guy like Gally, Leblanc, make the team instead of a guy like Noke.
Realistic speaking, Doan wants a long term deal, Id offer 3 years at 5.5M per, thats it.
And since its a 35+ contract, i'd backloaded, to force him to play all 3 years.
1st year 4M
2nd year: 5M
3rd year 7.5
I've never seen a more overrated proposed UFA contract. Doan's a 20g guy on a 35m+ contract who's never won or done anything. He's "worth" 5.5m tops. 3 years, 16.5m is the absolute highest I'd offer.
Posters who're offering 6m+; what kind of production do you expect from him? What's his absolute ceiling if he were to play on Plek's wing? I'd say between 50 to (tops) 70 points, and with the 35+ contract 3 years, 5.5m a year is awfully generous. Let Dallas and the other stupid GMs handcuff themselves, we're growing from within.

On a 3 years contract I'm with you, but on a one year deal I would go pretty high (it's not my money thought) like 7,5 millions. My maximum cap hit that I would give him would change in fonction of the lenght of the contract.
With Doan and a quality big gritty top 4 dman the Habs would be better than a playoff contender in my mind.
Money doesnt concern me one bit, does not affect how I cheer for my team.
I want to win and Doan at any cost with the team we have, would make
next year so much exciting to watch. I not only watch but watch win.
Its more about the term than the money. id give Doan 6.5 million if it was just for two years. Getting into 3 or 4 year contract is when id balk at the idea

Bring it on.
In addition to this, the teams that consistently spend to the cap have shown in history that the ceiling hasn't handcuffed them too much at all. Perhaps you can make a case for Chicago, but they still have managed to hang on to the main core other than Byfuglien. They still have toews, kane, keith seabrook, sharp, hossa etc...
So If the habs feel like they have the money to spend on Doan, I trust that they won't handcuff themselves. As a result, I don't really care about the money aspect of it. But I certainly want the player.
I dunno about you guys but i feel the team below is a contender for a decent playoff position. Or rather that on paper it looks like 8th seed would not be the highest conceivable achievement.

With Shane Doan, the forward sets look pretty damn good all of a sudden. It takes care of the missing top 6 winger, and it also adds alot of character, leadership, size, and physicality at the same. If I want to be nit-picky, my concern would be whether eller is best utitlized with those wingers, and also faceoffs. But the roster looks much better with Doan.
My only big remaining concern then would be the defense. Is Markov still a top tier d-man? As a top 4 guy, Emelin still needs to progress if this team is to be successful. Can the #5 and #6 guys hold up without hurting the team?

Louis Leblanc can not and will not play on the 4th line with Therrien, you forgot we don't have JM anymore.

Yeah, and so I will take Doan at the proposed $30M/4yrs crazydeal. Whatever risk it represents in the final 2 years, so be it. I can worry about that when/if the time comes.

Exactly ! This is the the way it should be thought out !

I'm pretty sure you're being sarcastic. Doan's not worth **** all, I'd rather try Palushaj/Gallagher than Doan (Doan @ 4yr/30m that is)

Okay for one Doan is a RW and we are loaded on that side.
Why would you pay more than 5 million for a guy on the downside of is career if you give Doan that much, how much should we give Max next year a kid who is a rising star??
Last if you throw Leblanc on the 4th line you do what we've been doing to our prospects for years, not giving them a chance to succeed! Leblanc is projected to be a third line RW with a possibility to fill in on the top two lines. He has got good hockey sense and needs experience and to fill out, something the majority of young kids need.
So we put him on the fourth line, give him 5-7 minutes of ice a night, frustrate him and kill his confidence!! BRILLIANT. Welcome to the Habs player development from the last regime.
We are not going to get Doan because for a 35 years old 20 goal scorer with some intangibles he is really worth 3 years at $5 million or $5.5 tops, and some fool GM( hey we had two recently) will pay the money he wants. So enjoy his visit but he'snot signiing here.
Oh, and there's that little silver cup he probably wants his name on within the next three years . too.
