Shut down line?

Is it just me, or does it look like we have no shut down line?

Tanguay - Cammalleri - Iginla
Glencross - Cervenka - Hudler
Baertschi - Backlund - Stempniak
Comeau - Stajan - Jackman

Seems like we have a #1 line, #2a line, #2b line, and a 4th line. Where's the checking line?

Who are we going to send out to shut the opposition's best line down?

The Anton.

In all seriousness I can see the second and third lines taking on that duty as they will be the speediest.

I think Glencross - Stajan - Comeau could work. Speedy, aggressive and two way. Plus Stajan can win a faceoff.

What line is that exactly? Forth line + Glencross?

We need to get away from this "checking line" type of thinking, we are going to see 3 offensively talented and orientated lines plus a 4th line that is physical and can chip in offensively. In a tight game with a few minutes left we will probably see a few different lines than we would normally see such as
Glencross - Backlund - Comeau and Tanguay - Stajan - Iginla to make sure we have a centerman who can win a draw as well as other good defensive players.

So with the game on the line, you're going to send out Backlund/Stajan to go tete-a-tete with Sedin/Datsyuk/Getzlaf/Toews/Thornton/Kopitar?

Exactly. You guys are arguing about something where neither side wins. It just shows how weak we are in the grit and shutdown department.

Hopefully Bouwmeester is traded for someone like Berglund or Courtiuer. There are still dmen we can sign to fill the hole left by Bouwmeester. We'll lose strength on the backend, but gain even more back up the middle. Our center position is just scary awful on paper right now.

Stajan was our most effective centerman this year and had more hits per game than any other center other than Jones. Also both are very effective defensive players so I would feel more comfortable with them than anyone else who would you play?

I'd go head-to-head with Cammalleri and Cervenka. No point in sending out our 4th line center against other teams' top lines.

If Stajan is on this team come fall, he better not be on the 4th line.

4th line Stajan = borderline useless. Though he tried very hard, he is not suited for an energy line role.

1st-2nd line Stajan = positive point totals in a support role. When playing with solid scoring talents Stajan has produced points and he can win FOs.

Unless Backlund or Cervenka blow Stajan out of the water, he is our best natural center.

Are you a goal behind, or a goal ahead? Is it an offensive draw, or a defensive one?

Blanket statements don't account for situational considerations.

I will say the Flames could really use a Yelle type of player. I would also love if we could find the room to add Arnott. This team is built very strange down the middle, I did not understand why we brought back Stempniak.

There is no one in the top-nine, let alone top-six that Stajan can displace. If he's on the team he's on the fourth line, with maybe spot duty on the 3rd line. Otherwise he's clearing waivers and playing in the minors.

pretty much. Like I said, on paper, right now, Stajan is our best natural center. Not even a contest at this point. If Cervenka and Backlund come out of the gates huge then we could see him in the pressbox/4th line.

People need to remember that Cervenka is not really a center. I really hope he translates well to the NHL, and can handle playing center. But the probability of him being better than Stajan is pretty slim.

KHL is not the NHL.

So instead of using our 2 best defensive centers who can win ~50% of their faceoffs you choose Cervenka who did not play center in the KHL full time because of his weak defensive game and Cammalleri who is actually less physical than Stajan. I don't get this logic at all, we aren't looking to score late in a game and yet you still want to sit Stajan? He is the best defensive center we have and I would say he was as good or better than Jokinen defensively.

If Jones wasn't so terrible at faceoffs, he'd be perfect for a shutdown role. He complected neutralized Thornton in that one game last year. All of our centers suck at faceoffs, but Jones is especially terrible.

I think our best shut down would be:
Glencross-Backlund-Stempnaik

This will probably be our third line next year, but i also think our 4th line of Bouma-Stajan-Comeau would also be a very solid defensive line.
