Hockey DB has Bjugstad at 6' 4", the Gopher site has him at 6' 5"..both sites have him around 210 lbs. The Penticton site has Lucia at 6' 3" 195 lbs.

Lucia might be an inch or so shorter and about 15 lbs lighter, but he is also a year younger. Still has some time to grow. By the time he leaves ND and joins the Aeros/Wild, we could see him an inch taller and around 215 lbs...

Regardless, they have a similar size and frame as well as a similar game. Both have a good shot and will take the puck to the net.

Lucia went to Penticton instead of spending his senior season at Wayzata, Nelson spent his senior year at Warroad and Bjugstad accelerated HS to join Minnesota in what would have been his senior year (although in fairness he was one of the oldest in his grade).

The U had Bjugstad at 6'5", 211 last year and Florida listed him at 6'6" for their prospect camp. Eye test says he's 6'5".

I think Bjugstad has the possibility for more physicality in his game. Lucia can't handle it. Lucia is more of a skill player.

And whats the age difference. Lucia is most likely still growing. With added muscle from a couple years working out at coolege and probably adding an inch or two they probably will end up being pretty close in size. But besides size I really have no idea how Lucia plays so the Bjugstad comparison could be way off for all I know.

I see the size comparison. What I was wondering about was the career progression. Bjugstad jumped right to the Gophers after High School, he didn't do any USHL time. Lucia went to Canadian Jr A. Was he eligible to make the Div I jump?

Its highly unlikely he will grow close to Bjugstad's height. Lucia's family isn't that big and its not usual for people to grow in their late teens and early twenties. Size can't be taught, its not a bad thing. 6'2"-6'3" is still pretty damn big.

EDIT: As a senior Bjugstad was a shade under 6'4" and already 190. Pretty damn big.

A Star Tribune article has him at 6'5" 2 days before the 2010 draft.

I grew 2.5 inches over 3 months during Marine Corps boot camp when I was 18. It was actually a real pain in the ass because my dress uniform didn't fit me properly before our final inspection for graduation....., my trousers were about 2" over my ankle...luckily they were able to get it tailored in time.

Lucia was 2 inches shorter and 10 pounds lighter during his draft month.

Bjugstad is going into his 3rd year with the Gophers and could have turned pro this year.

Lucia is about a year younger and going into his 1st year Div I.

Not the same career progression at all IMO.

After Lucia plays a year at Notre Dame we'll know a lot more.

But the fact is they were/are still growing. Lucia should be at least 6' 4" and around 215-220 lbs by the time he is ready for the NHL....Might be an inch or two behind Bjugstad, but they will BOTH be big boys.

True true. His skill level is far behind Bjugstad, though. I still think he was a reach in the second round.

While I'm happy with how Lucia's year went in Penticton - the Vees won the Canadian Junior "A" title and he was 3rd in points - it's hard to compare his numbers and growth. Lucia is among the first crop of MN HS guys to head to the BCHL and as a trailblazer there's no example of what the development curve is. It's promising but like wildfish said, have to see how Lucia responds to D1 hockey.

Shameless self-promotion: Talking with the Vees announcer about Lucia back in February.

Wow.....I completely disagree with you on the skill set...but I guess we'll agree to disagree...I think he could turn into one of our top prospects in a year or two. Really looking forward to following his progression at ND this year.

He was projected as a late first rounder, maybe early second, how can he be a reach at the very end of the second?

That picture made it look like he has chicken legs. We'll see how he does this year. Obviously, I'm hoping that he turns out because PWF are hard to come by.

I don't do goalies, either... Wait, that doesn't sound right!

But Bulmer vs Phillips is an easy one for me, I think Bulmer is going to be a solid NHL 3rd Line player. Phillips is like Wellman, a top 2 line player or bust. IMO Phillips is going turn out like Wellman.

If it isn't size, then something has to be the reason he was picked so low compared to Bjugstad.

I'm sure spending a season in the BCHL before heading to college didn't help.

You never know. He put up almost 1.5 PPG in the regular season and just over PPG in playoffs. I'm complaining about him doing that, but it is a lesser league. I don't think dominating opponents is going to help development too much.

Is he getting any consideration for WJC-20? Don't they have a summer camp or something?
