Rangers Prospect Poll: #7

Jesper Fasth won round 6 and Marek Hrivik is added to the poll.

Don't forget to write who should be added to the poll.

TOP PROSPECTS

2. LW Carl Hagelin
3. C J.T. Miller
4. D Dylan McIlrath
5. RW Christian Thomas
6. RW Jesper Fast

Jesper Fast

2011-12 HV71 Jonkoping SEL 21 5 11 16

"It was impressive to watch him at the World Juniors, and the type of goals he scores, they're not tap-ins around the crease. They are shots that he's making when he's getting them. So we are pretty excited because we think that he's accelerated his growth."

St. Croix is the best player on the best team in the best junior league in the world. We also got great reports from his team's ticket-holder. He deserves this spot.

Add Oscar Lindberg, a former second rounder who has established himself in the SEL.

Add Lindberg.

There is no way St. Croix has a higher ceiling than Skjei, Nieves, Fasth, and even Lindberg. All of those players have higher chance of actually making it to the NHL because of the tools they possess. St. Croix was a great pick for where we got him. But he dropped as far as he did because teams are wary of his size. He is very small. Playing in Traverse City doesn't show much because that tournament is hardly physical. And quite honestly I'm not too impressed with the WHL as far as the physical side of things going. He is not being challenged enough there. Nigel Dawes came out of the WHL. He was a high scorer on his Kootenay team. Game never translated here. I have a bad feeling St. Croix's game won't. He plays another year in the WHL. Then he is going to at least need 1, maybe 2 years in the AHL adjusting to the strength and physical play at the Pro level. By that time players like Fast, Miller, Nieves, Lindberg, and even McColgan and Fogarty probably will have surpassed whether it be because they have made it to the NHL already or they have progressed better than him.

Skjei. I want to say add Andersson, but I'll say add Lindberg for now.

Do you know what we are talking about when we talk of the "ceiling"? Because it doesn't mean the odds of making the NHL, it means the odds of being a star in the NHL. Stu Bickel has a better shot of making the NHL than Skjei does, but his ceiling is far lower.

This is just wrong. St. Croix is not very small. We had Thomas ranked in the top-5 and he's significantly smaller than St. Croix, who's 5-11 180 pounds. That's decent size for an offensive kid. And according to reports, he's decently strong, he's just not very tall. But it's not like he's 5-8. At 5-11, height isn't a big deal.

According to almost everyone, the WHL is better defensively and in terms of physical play than either the OHL or the QMJHL. It's the hardest of the three leagues to score in.

That doesn't mean that every other offensive player fails. Dawes was way too over-hyped. He was only 5-8, which is a whole 3 inches below St. Croix. As an 18 year old, Dawes got only 70 points, and not 105 like St. Croix did. St. Croix got 50% more points at the same age. At the age of 19, Dawes still scored only 76 points.

Dawes was never as good a prospect as St. Croix. He was smaller, worse defensively, and not as good offensively.

Wow, this is really getting ridiculous. St. Croix over Sjkei? Damn, this guy is getting underrated. St. Croix is an undersized scorer who was terrible in the Memorial Cup and playoffs. Skjei is a 6'3, mobile beast of a defenseman.

Skjei. Andersson.

Lindberg got sent down brieftly to his first division team last year so I don't know about his 'establsihed himself in the SEL' thing. He certainly was having trouble producing any offense. If he makes it he's definitely a bottom 6 player--almost no top 6 upside. A faceoff specialist--penalty kill guy. One other concerning thing from my perspective the Rangers traded Werek for him right after they dealt for his first cousin Tim Erixon. I don't know if Erixon being moved to Columbus is going to have an effect on Oscar or not but it definitely might make him less willing (despite signing with us) to want to play for us.

That's not even true. St. Croix's teammate Griffin Reinhart just went fourth overall to the Islanders.

St. Croix. The guy put up 105 points as a 19 year old in the WHL. The size thing is being very overused and it isn't true. Ryan Callahan is 5'11 200. AS a grown man, St. Croix has the chance to be around 195 to 200 as well. We don't look at Cally as being small, so why should we do the same with St. Croix? His body type is that of Claude Giroux, plays a similar style as well. I think he gets overlooked here, by a lot of people. Skjei was a first rounder, but at this point in time, he's behind St. Croix in development. I also believe his ceiling is higher as well. St. Croix has the chance to become a 1C, more likely to be a 2C. Don't know how Skjei is going to play in the NCAA. Too many unknowns for me to put him there, but more upside than the others mentioned that he is next for me after St. Croix.

Add Lindberg. At a young age showed he can play at good level in the 2nd best league in the world, but isn't consistent enough to stick around. Not too many, besides to picks usually do.

Ditto, I think this board discounts too much what MSC accomplished this year with Oil Kings and relies too much on the small sample of his play at TC last year as a rookie and the prospect camp this year (after he played more games than any other NYR prospect). He was by far the go to guy on offense on the team that played in MC final and while his production rate did slow down in the play-offs, I think he simply run out of gas which is not a crime for an 18 year-old who's still not physically matured yet.

Where's Fogarty? He needs to be added ASAP.

Oops, my bad - add Lindberg.

Do we really need a poll after a tie breaker? Shouldn't the loser of the tie breaker just take the next spot?

ditto!

-They compare him to McD with his fluid skating...McD being one of the best blueliners in the game.

Skjei, add Lindberg, though I'm kind of tossed up between him and McColgan. Fogarty has no business being on the list yet.

Yes we need it. We've had instances in the past where the loser of the tiebreaker didn't win until three rounds later. Sometimes you have a guy that 25 posters here love, enough to push into the tiebreaker, but no one else wants to vote for for a few rounds.
