Correct on the first part. Alexandrov was not tendered a qualifying offer and became an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2012. His contract wasn't bought out.

Desbiens signs with the Canucks

Neat, depth signing at best, AHL signing at worst.

palmieri would be 51, but they have 3 slide risks (dumba, brodin, phillips)

dumba and phillips are likely to return to junior IMO.

Actually, Phillips is in his 20 year old season this year so he can't slide and will more than likely be in the AHL but until Dumba can be sent back to juniors, they can't sign Palmieri unless they move someone out.

IIRC slide risks dont count until their contracts are guaranteed to go into effect.

so you can be at 50+ during the offseason as long as you have the slide risks to cover it.

What it could mean is that unless they lose a contract by the end of TC, they would HAVE to send dumba back, even if they didnt want to (though let's be honest, they probably are planning to unless he blows them away at TC).

take a look at dallas: 52 active contracts, but 8 of them are slide risks.

Interesting. The CBA says...
Quote:
Not more than 50 Players signed to an SPC and not less than 24 Players
and 3 goalkeepers under an SPC. Age 18 and age 19 Players who were returned to
Juniors, and who have not played 11 NHL Games in one season, shall be exempt from
inclusion in the 50 Player limit.
Which I would interpret as meaning the player would already have to have been assigned to juniors to not be part of the 50 player limit. But I guess it's just poorly written there.

that is indeed the wording. And i cant find anything regarding offseason exemptions.

that said, dallas is a current example, and i'm positive i've seen other teams with 50+ during the offseason before. Maybe it is explicitly stated somewhere else, but in practice it seems to be enforced as "total contracts - slide risks must be <= 50."

The slide risk contracts are considered contracts for their first non-slide risk year until proven otherwise. Until the player plays 10 games, it's not a contract in terms of the 50-contract limit.

I'm sorta baffled by this one. Pickard's not a free agent, he still owes Nashville another year on his ELC, per capgeek and players can't sign to play overseas while under NHL contract. So, either Pickard is voiding the last year of his ELC and you'll see him go on waivers in the next few days, or Nashville is happy to have him get some better competition and will loan him to the Swedish team.
