Only reason I remember this guy is because you needed a sinus infection to say his name correctly

I don't think I've ever cared less for a Canucks transaction than this one...just a waste.

Yes, two seasons. My guess is Arniel pulled for this. Desbiens played a lot and in a big role when Arniel was a coach but has regressed every year in the past 3 years.

How anyone can say nothing wrong with this at all... I don't know. When there are better players out there that have experience with our system and fit in with our AHL team, looked better in call ups, and are much more versatile, this kind of signing and player is what breeds mediocrity. After the season he had, consider me thoroughly surprised he got an NHL contract.

is desbiens the guy that broke his thumb in a fight while playing with the canucks? think it was him and remember a pic from the fight showing him wrapping his fingers around the thumb to throw a punch. dumbest thing i've seen in a fight.

Of all the Canuck related news this summer, I am somewhat amused that this is the one that ends up as the headline on TSN.

EDIT 2: And I meant "solid player at the AHL level". Wow.
Seriously agreed. I checked out tsn.ca/nhl too before I even came year just like I always do and saw this Canuck guy in a jersey before any of the text came up and I said what the ****. Then I read that it's Desbiens and I was dumbfounded as to how it warranted to be a top cover story. Wow it's a weak summer. I guess they had to boot the Doan wants big bucks headline that lasted almost a week.

What the ****? It is a little disturbing that our pro scouts get so glamourized by horrible professional hockey players like Desbien/Weise/Glass sometimes.

This guy is awful and it's a shame he's back in the organization.

Desbiens sucks, but you should be embarrassed to make a post this dumb in public.

Weise and Glass are serviceable fourth line NHL players. Desbiens isn't even a reliable call up at this point. Huge difference.

Good call-up 4th liner ... Obviously isn't going to make or break the team, though ... Bolduc signing next?

Would rather have Bitz too but he was probably looking for more money. Surprised this guy got an NHL contract at all, but probably Arniel pushed for it.

Weise hasn't proven he is an NHL calibre player what so ever.

How many games does he have to play to count against the cap ?

what? yes he has. he's an above replacement level player right now and a pretty good 4th liner.

he's also a rookie

First off, these sarcastic 'bring on the Cup!' posts every time the team makes a minor-league signing are really freaking irritating. Every team makes 5-8 signings like this every summer.

As for the signing itself, yuck. Don't understand it at all. Desbiens regressed horribly in the AHL last season and scored 3 goals in 60 games. And is completely useless at the NHL level because of his lack of skating ability - we've been down this road before.

If he's an Arniel favourite who you want to give an AHL contract to, OK, I guess. But to waste a contract spot on this guy when we've let better AHL depth like Bitz and Duco - who were infinitely better callup options - go, is strange indeed.

Do you expect the Canucks to ice 20 superstars? Glass and Weise are good fourth line NHL players, and Desbiens is an above-average AHLer that every team in the league has under contract.

Not to mention Glass is clearly considered at least an average fourth liner with a contending team in Pittsburgh offering him 1.1 million a year.

Weise is also a rookie that fared exceptionally well in difficult defensive zone minutes. His faceoff start ratio (I'm really no good with these numbers) was mostly defensive zone.

I do agree that this Desbiens signing is suspect at best but to lump in Glass and Weise with this guy is a bit over the top. Really not sure why we care so much as he's a contract that will never touch the NHL, and Arniel knows how to get the best out of him. Average AHL signing.

Weise started fewer shifts percentage-wise in the offensive zone than any player in the league with 20 GP+ not named Manny Malhotra.

I remember him being a pretty decent player for the Moose a few years ago that could bring some toughness and scoring but it does'nt look like he's done much since to deserve an NHL contract.Like others have said,I'd much rather see Bitz get another chance to see what he can do.
