Hypothetical: What would CBJ do if Coyotes disappear?

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nhl-con...0678--nhl.html

I don't think it would ever get to this point but if what this article say is true and the NHL decided to suspend operations in Phoenix out of necessity, which player would the CBJ take in a disbursement draft? (assuming we would get the first pick for having the worst record in the league.)

Both Ray Whitney and Shane Doan have either already left or are very close to leaving the desert as free agents.

We seem pretty well set at defense but it could be hard to turn down someone like Keith Yandle or Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

My thoughts would be either Radim Vrbata - career high 35 goals last season but should be good for 20 to add some more offense or Mike Smith - great season last year but product of Coyotes defensive system (i.e. Bryzgalov)or has he turned it around and figured it out? (can't be worse than Mason)

Note: I like the Coyotes and hope they stay so I'm not wishing ill will on the organization.

Can't pass up a Yandle or an Ekman-Larsson. You'd just have to trade some other guys like Moore, Tyutin, or Savard to make room.
Mikkel Boedker would be my top choice at forward.
Hopefully the Coyotes get moved out of Phoenix asap, they should've done that a few years ago.

Probably Ekman-Larsson.

I'd be curious to see how something like this would be handled. Hopefully it doesn't end up happening.

Take Mike Smith.

Haha just kidding, we should take OEL. Hopefully it never would come to that though. Phoenix is a huge market and if the NHL can't succeed there that's bad news.

I hadn't heard anything about Phoenix going dark, but it's a hell of a card in the labor negotiations.

I'd take Mike Smith in any dispersal draft. Or at least be very, very tempted to do so.

I think this is just a big CBA bargaining chip for Bettman to play. However, if it comes to that, I'd take Yandle and not look back. He's signed for another 5 years at a reasonable rate. Trade some existing blueliners for a goalie and a RW.

In my opinion

they would have to take OEL. Stud for many years on the blue line

I like Mike Smith, Yandle and Doan of course, but we would only get one choice.

As much as I hate to say this, that would be a great thing for us, if Howson could turn around and get a goalie or scoring forward for other pieces.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!

Take OEL. Trade some combo of Erixon, Moore, Savard, Calvert, Kubalik to Montreal for Mike Smith.

:-)

Not going to happen.

OEL. They're absolutely same age with Erixon. We could have had Canadian, Swedish, American and Russian pairs. Moore-Savard would have made a 5th North American AHL pair. We would be able to trade D-men by pairs for offensive lines.

This would be amazing for our franchise. OEL looks like a #1 defender, he outplayed even Yandle in the playoffs.

Howson would take OEL and then try to trade him to the Rangers for Stepan, Krieder, Nash and their 2014 1st.

Like most, take OEL or Yandle. Some mentioned moving other D to make them fit but we can also offer OEL to lets say Philly and get one of their stud forwards.

If it were to happen this Summer, I wouldn't take Smith. He is a UFA after 1 season and it would be a waste of a pick imo.

For the forwards, probably Hanzal.

What happens to the prospects? Up for grabs or back to the draft? If they're up for grabs, I would look at another D in Gormley.

Didn't read the article, who's to say Columbus would get first pick? Maybe they do a lottery draft for every team(kind of like what they did with the Crosby draft).

You are officially off my Christmas card list.

What's with the love for Phoenix? They lose money and can't find a qualified buyer. Sell them to a qualified buyer and move them. (And I figure I'm not on your Xmas card list anyway )

And I'm sure Winnipeg will be thrilled to keep playing in the East until they do.

What I'm reading is that teams that lose money should be sold and moved.

No. Who should be moved are teams that have no ownership and lose money and play in an arena far from the action. My take on phoenix/Glendale is like the Coliseum in Richfield. Bad team and bad location, made it a parking lot (I think).

As long as owners are willing to spend money to keep a team afloat no reason to move them.

Although interesting question - if Phoenix loses money, how is the league absorbing that? All owners equally? League coffers?

What would the CBJ do if the Coyotes Disappear? Be "Next" on the list for the majority of Canadian fans who don't know the arena situation, and just assume every struggling team should be relocated north of the border.
