Oilers Re-sign Vande Velde & Plante To One Year Deals

Per Oilers Website

I like where Vande Velde's game is headed, and maybe this is the year Plante puts it all together.

Maybe this is the year Edmonton can replace Belanger with CVV. After next season we can burry Horcoff's contract and give the 3C job to Lander. He'll surely be ready for it by then and it'll save us tons of cap space.

Maybe enough for us to go sign one of those new fangled power forwards people are talking about. I hear they check people right through the glass into the fourth row of seats.

So was everyone just waiting for these two threads to merge like me?

Probably both guys last years with us unless they make the big club. Plante has shown nice improvement and while VV doesn't show a whole ton of flash if he could get a bit better in a few more areas he'd be a useful #12/13.

Are these just AHL one way contracts?

Ridiculous, neither CVV or Lander and even close to Belanger or Horcoff as hockey players.

I doubt they would sign one-way AHL deals. Both were called up last year and didn't play absolutely horribly.

No. They're NHL contracts, not AHL. I assume they're two-way.

I'm not sure what you mean by "one-way AHL" contracts?

He means an AHL contract that only goes 1 way.

CVV is 25 and barely important to OKC, let alone the Oilers. Don't really see the point. Giving him another year to see if someone his age just miraculously gets better?

Plante is at least understandable in that he keeps getting hurt, so they'll hope for a healthy season out of him at least.

My hope is that this is the year pre-11/12 Belanger replaces his evil doppelgänger, 11/12 Belanger.

I think CVV is insurance for injuries at centre, and/or a Gagner trade.

Looks like he was outproduced by every other center on the team, and he'll be getting passed on the depth chart by guys coming up eventually as well. Any role he had was probably just fueled by the Oilers making the mistake of keeping Lander in the NHL for so long.

I'll guess this is his last pro paycheck.

Laterally---?

I look at these more as called up yet let downers. AKA - Two Way NHL Contracts to answer his question. Separate wages for each league. No it's your turn to explain Waiver eligiblity clauses. Thanks in advance.

this makes no sense to me, Whether CVV was in the A or not had nothing to do with Lander's spot on the main club

SImilar to this type of new fangled Oiler?

Regarding the signings, I think this is both players last kick at the can... so to speak.

It makes sense if you consider that CVV's role in OKC was supported by the fact that Lander was playing on the Oil for a good portion of the season last year. If Lander is in OKC most of this year, CVV's role both in OKC and as a possible call up are in jeopardy I think.

Maybe because he wasn't used as an offensive weapon? He was used as a shutdown center and did his job well.

Well that's according to his coach who talked about how he had full confidence in using him against the other teams best.

But hey, what does Nelson know?

Exactly. I love when people view players only based on stats.

Chris Vande Velde is a big part of the Barons. Alex Plante too.

The interesting thing with VV and I think it's good is that the role he plays in OKC is the exact same one he'll play when called up to the Oil. Not like other guys who play an offensive role in OKC and then are put into a bottom 6 role.

Plante's deal is 1 year $625K NHL / $65K AHL. NHL cap hit was $1.075M on his elc. AHL salary is the same as his elc.

VandeVelde's contract isn't posted yet.

CVV is a fantastic third line centre in OKC.

You don't call up an offensive, first or second line centre to be your NHL first line centre

Roles in the NHL match roles in the AHL

he was good enough that the team was confident enough to trade Omarra and have him play more.
