Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren told the Philadelphia Inquirer on Thursday he expects to have a contract extension completed with coach Peter Laviolette in about a week. Laviolette's current deal runs through the end of the 2012-13 season.

Laviolette has led the Flyers to back-to-back 47-win seasons. In parts of three seasons in Philadelphia, he has a record of 122-73-26, and 23-22 in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Flyers have won at least one playoff series in each of his three seasons.

He was hired by the Flyers on Dec. 4, 2009 with the team 11th in the Eastern Conference standings. They turned things around, and after a shootout win on the last day of the regular season, Laviolette led the Flyers to the 2010 Stanley Cup Final.

Laviolette extension coming within week

The Flyers are set to extend coach Peter Laviolette’s contract and expect a deal to be completed within a week, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

Laviolette, 47, has led the Flyers to a 122-73-26 record since taking over the reins as coach in December 2009. His current contract would expire at the end of the 2012-13 season – but it appears the team won’t allow that to happen.

^ It's all done with trick mirrors.

Copy and paste and use the "quote" feature which is one of the icons above the message box. Usually, the firstcouple of paragraphs gets placed inside that feature. Then copy and paste the link if it isn't automatically provided (some sites do that).

Love it!!! Peter has a great rapport with the young players on the team and a lot of guys have improved their game under his watch. When you consider that he managed to work in 7 rookies into the lineup last year and this team remained competitive as it did, well, what more could you ask from a coach.

Timmeh has it as a two-year extension:

Peter Laviolette picked up a two-year contract extension on Wednesday.

The Flyers' head coach, whose deal would have expired following the 2012-13 season, was extended by general manager Paul Holmgren. His new contract will take him through the 2014-15 season.

"We are thrilled to have Peter continue his work with our group as we push to compete for the Stanley Cup,” Holmgren said. “Peter has done a terrific job for us and is very deserving of this extension."

That Laviolette was extended was not surprising, because he earned it. That’s not to say all three of his seasons have been particularly rosy.

His first year – 2009-10 – saw the club qualify for the playoffs on the final day of the season. When postseason began, the Flyers went on an unforeseen run to the Stanley Cup Final, creating history along the way with a 3-0 series comeback against the Boston Bruins.

This! It's good to have that stability and should be good for the young guys development too.

If a coach is still under contract with a team and they fire him, do they still have to pay out the contract?

I believe they did the same with Stevens as well...he was gone by Dec. Both I think got longer extensions than Lavi just did if I recall correctly so I think 2 yr extension is fair given Lavi's short shelf life penchant. He has about two more years with this group IMO at best although I think he won't finish out this extension...

Love Lavy. Love the deal. I want to win first, but I don't think I could handle a team playing passive. Lavy brings a forecheck, take it to em system. With the right defensively responsible players, that system can bring us a cup. Ala Carolina.

Next up: Shane Doan signs in Philly. Fingers and toes crossed.

What do extensions for coaches ever mean? Nothing.
