Chicago//Carolina - a couple months into the season

Michael Frolik

2013 CAR 1st

Here, me out on this one. As of now, the 'Canes have Jeremy Welsh penciled in at 3C, and while he appears to have a ton of upside, he's played 1 NHL game thus far. If he struggles a few months in, Carolina needs to do something about 3C, since I'd imagine it wouldn't look to good if this team, after the money that was spent, and the players that were signed, missed the playoffs. With Frolik, Carolina can add a solid player with just enough flash to be interesting, who could centre a solid Tlusty//Frolik//LaRose 3rd line.

This trade for Chicago frees up an additional 2.33m to a team that only has 7.54m left (according to capgeek) and gives them some flexibility throughout the season and a decent trade chip come deadline day (safe to assume the pick will be in the low to mid 20s)

Thoughts??

I really can't see Frolik netting a 1st.

It is probably an overpayment, but I think it helps both teams. If he can return to his 20 goal FLA form, I think the trade is worth it.

Well, first off, Frolik isn't really a centre. He can play there, but he's much better at wing (and it's not like he's been very good in Chicago thus far). I'm a believer in Frolik, I think he can turn it around, but if you're offering a 1st then why wait? Deal.

I'm not one of those people who believe picks and prospects are more valuable than NHL proven talent, but I don't think it's wise for a team to not have a first round pick 2 years in a row.

No way Carolina is trading a first for baby Jagr, this is a massive overpayment.

I wouldn't do this. I don't want to give up our 1st for a 2nd straight year.

Can I offer more with Frolik on behalf of the Hawks? I insist you take a decent prospect to Carolina with Frolik. It would feel dirty otherwise.

While he may be overvaluing Frolik, I understand his thought process.

I do expect Carolina to be in the playoffs this year, and so they will be improving the team as the year goes on. One of the weaker parts of this team will probably be the third line center position (hopefully not, though - We'll see what Welsh can do).

I, however, would prefer guys like Cullen, Koivu, Prospal, or Fisher. I might even take a chance on Lombardi. - all of these guys have one year left on their contract, so if guys like Welsh, Rask (REALLY like this guy), or even Dalpe are ready to step up next year, the spot will be there for them.

What's really funny is that this trade proposal was created by a Hurricanes fan. Definitely a yes from the Hawks side. And before any Canes fans talk about how terrible this trade is you should know that I have it on good authority that Stan Bowman has some pretty embarrassing pictures of Jim Rutherford getting down (so to speak) in Vegas from earlier this off season. I think this could happen.

Frolik for Carolinas first? Sure. It's potentially a high pick depending on how long it takes for Carolina to get chemistry, and if Ward plays like he did at the beginning of last season.

I'm just confused as to why you wouldn't go after Kruger. We have two 3Cs on Chicago in Bolland and Kruger.

Chad LaRose also has those pictures.

It sounds like Chicago and Carolina could be good trading partners, because we will most certainly be on the market for a 3C if one of our prospects doesn't step up.

Realistic trade for Carolina's 1st...

Frolik+ Kruger?

One of McNeil/Danault/Pirri/Tuevo(hopefully) should be ready by next year. Kruger is expendable. Frolik can probably be a lot better on another team

for a 1st? no thanks, a 2nd maybe but I really can't see Frolik carying the kind of value that would warant even a late first IMO.

Frolik + Krueger is more intriguing, but I'd still pass as I'm really not sure where Krueger would even fit with our lineup.

There are better targets out there if the Canes are dangling a first for the #3 center, depending on where teams are in the playoff mix.

3C and defensive-defensemen are our biggest needs. Ideally the defenseman would be a big crease-clearing type, rather than a positional guy. We also need a goon if you have one lying around.

I kind of doubt the organization trades another 1st, but our other picks are moveable. We have an abundance of NHL-level bottom-6 wingers a few second-tier forward prospects. NHL forwards in descending order of trade value: Jokinen (maybe), LaRose, Tlusty, Nodl, Dwyer, Wallace, Stewart. Forward prospects in descending order of trade value: Welsh, Bowman, Rask, Dalpe, Boychuk, Nash, Samson. If this trade happens, it's because we aren't happy with Welsh, Dalpe, and Nash at 3C. We have a few defensive prospects but probably need to hang on to them. Sanguinetti and Gragnani are offensive defensemen who are currently squeezed out of our NHL roster.

Frolik wont net anything close to a 1st

And he is a LW/RW not a C... If he goes to Canes it will be small level trade such as for a 4th/5th rounder

The reality is Frolik is coming off worst season of his career. Yet again we can see the potential from his elavated play in playoffs (Again). It appears he will be on Hawks for this coming season so we shall see if he can rebound

If he doesn't rebound with Hawks he likely gets moved somepoint next season to a team like Canes in a change of scenery type move.

Since this is a midseason trade a anyway, hypothetically if the Canes are looking like they won't make the playoffs around TD time and the Hawks will, what if...

Hawks 1st (20-30 range)
Frolik
Kruger

CAR 1st (8-15 range)

Carolina gets 2 decent roster players that can potentially fill that 3C need and get to have a 1st round pick.

Hawks get to clear Frolik's salary, get something for Kruger, and get a early-mid 1st.

*all of this assuming Carolina struggles next year

LMAO a 1st??

A severely overpaid 4th liner who can't even make Chicago's squad most nights nets a high 1st round pick?

He's closer to being worth a 5th round pick than a first round pick.

Might I suggest Chicago take back one of:

- Anthony Stewart
- Patrick Dwyer
- Tim Wallace

In order to open up the necessary roster spots for us? Otherwise we have a major logjam of bottom-6 wingers and are probably going to waive somebody down to Charlotte, which is financially significant for our organization.

Of the above, Dwyer is probably the most viable player but I guess it depends on your roster needs.

Ok, the OP is pretty obviously not happening, but something with Kruger actually could be sound. Staal-Staal-Kruger-Brent/Welsh does actually not sound half bad, although potentially kinda sad when JStaal is your faceoff specialist.
