That rule applies to virtually all sports. Events like diving, swimming, beach volleyball, etc put a 2 team/person limit per country.

I remember for the 2004 games, Ian Thorpe got DQ'd at the Australian trials and wasn't supposed to race in Athens for 1 of the events. 2 others qualified in his place. One of those guys ahead of him gave up his spot to Thorpe who went onto to win gold in Athens.

I'm sure the US has swimmers who could compete for a medal alongside Phelps and co., but aren't permitted to because they finished 3rd at the trials.

In gymnastics, it's set up differently in that they don't do the 2 person per country limit until you arrive at the games. You have to do the qualifying events in order to determine who gets to compete for the medals for all around and individual events.

Would it have made people feel better had it been decided at the USA gymnastics trials which 2 American female gymnists could compete for the all around medals at London?

No difference between that and what they are doing here. Just a timing thing.

Except the announcer, who was a gymnast didn't get it either.

No way that was a handstand. No way. Ukraine and Britain got screwed.

I've had more fun watching the Olympics than I thought I would. The gymnastics is fun. Love the rowing and swimming. And I've been watching a lot of volleyball and soccer too.

Women's basketball is fun too. Holy crap do some of those teams suckkkkk.

Leyva takes bronze for the US, coming back from a rough start and risking everything on a massively challenging high bar routine...which he pulled off.

OYFG, Nguyen. Nobody here had him pegged to win a medal.

Yeah, I don't know enough about the technical aspect of the sport to critique the judges, but it looked just about perfect to me. Pretty dominant performance all around.

She is perfect in every way. Also the loudest yeller i have heard. During every routine you could hear her screaming over everything. She tweeted her voice is gone today.

Hopefully she gets it back soon. Does she go again?

She is in individual final for the vault. Which she is expected to win since she's the undisputed best in the world.

Anyone tell me how Beth Tweddle of Great Britain did/is doing in the women's individual?

I'm pretty sure she competed alone.

Yah, she was like "it's just a toe." Way to go, more awesome than Annia Hatch (the U.S Vault specialist in Athens).

As for Wieber, I feel for her. It's absolutely devastating to have something you worked for for a long time disappear just like that b/c of the rule. Maybe she was underscored but it's all relative. I'm sure others were underscored too, especially b/c some events score lower than others. But I'm so proud of the U.S team winning Gold for the first time since Atlanta. US Gymnastics has always been about the team.

I don't like B. Karoyli's "order" argument. He made it seem like the other two girls didn't deserve it.

And as far as the media goes- maybe if they hadn't hyped her so much this wouldn't have been such a big deal (I'm not saying anything about the merits of the publicity).

I never saw so many different people from so many different countries perform so well at sports that just boggle my mind. A really all around vintage year for great gymnastic talent, both male and female.
