I thought it was 5.5 per year, which is way too high. But 2.75 is way too low...
Something in the middle is fair.

Maybe 3yrs (1yr before UFA I believe) at 3.5-4.0 per year? I think that's more fair.

If I was a team GM, I'd offer sheet him, knowing MTL only wants to pay him 2.75 per year.

I understand your point of comparioson and it's a reasonable one but it needs to be said, PK Subban is a much much better player than Johnson. Just look at the player usage charts, time on ice, and boxcars from the last season. Even compared to what has been Johnsons career season Subban is much better. Subban is a very good defenseman, a solid #1 who can play the oppositions best and get the puck moving the right way.

Something reported on TSN and RDS is a pretty substantial rumor, obviously it will be discussed.

Well Letang got 3.5M, so I mean somewhere between that Johnson got and Letang 3.5M would be fair.

And also it was said by RDS that they were meeting for the 1st time this week, so this probably the first offer, meaning it settles in the 3 to 3.5 range.

I don't actually think the money is going to be the main issue, its going to be the term, with the rumour that Subban wants a long term deal.

Subban on a two year deal would be about 5MM. Anyone saying otherwise hasn't seen the rate the Dman are getting payed..

They should extend him more like 6 to 8 years, but I see the Habs trading him for some reason.

Letang got 4 years@$3.5M per. Those are all arbitration years. Subban is NOT arbitration eligible. He will be next summer. The 2 year contract covers 1 non-arb and an arb year. Johnson got a 2 year bridge contract in 2010 and he signed a 4 year deal recently for $3.75M which covers 1 year of group III. Subban will cost more in a longer term deal but MTL's offer of 2 years/$5.5M is right in the ballpark.

A quick look at what some RFA defensman were extended at:

Hedman: 4years 16million
Myers: Can't remember exact term, but 5.5 million for 6 years I think

Subban should easily be able to get the same deal as Hedman....Myers looks overpaid (especially when compared to Karlsson's extension).

Subban is a burgeoning star in the league - $2.75 is a significant low ball.

Those comparing it to Erik Johnson...sillyness.

Johnson had two good years, but also missed an entire season in between. He was due a lowball, his 4 year extension he got recently at $3.75/yr was after two seasons that were worse than Subban's last two.

Subban has more value than Johnson now.

How?

Letang's deal was signed with the upper limit of the salary cap at 56.8 million - The value of that contract now is approximately $4.3m/yr.

Subban's seasons to date were more impressive than Letang's prior to his extension.

It'd be cool to see the Flyers do that. Be sure, Habs will match, but Hell hath no fury like a Bergevin scorned. Habs will be knocking on Couturier's door the moment he goes RFA.

Or maybe that's what I would do.

It really isn't. He played 24 min a night and the fact they pay for potential matters.

I find this contract offer hard to believe. Emelin got 2 mil per for 2 years. Now subban gets 2.75 per? Not even same class.

This. 22 year old defenseman don't cash in unless they're Drew Doughty. This contract makes sense for both sides.

I would give subban a long term deal with a cap of 5m Minimum.

This guy is a great defenseman, and should get payed big time.

Look at all these crazy contracts that have been handed out for worse D-men in the last two years.

Would absolutely love to have a troll on our backend to match our front lines. Offer sheet him
