I would love to have Ryan Kesler back in his hometown. What do you think it would take to bring him back?
Filppula
Nyquist
Kindl

Kesler
Thoughts?
I dont think that even comes close to getting it done. When Kesler is healthy he is a top 20 centre in the league easily. Who would centre the 2nd line and why would the Canucks take that drop off? Most likely you would have a centre who isnt even remotely close defensively and then they have 2 centres who cant/dont/wont play defense.

I think the package would have to really blow Gillis' socks off, to be honest. There really isn't any pressing need at all to move Kesler, he is key to the Canucks' success. So I think it would have to be a very, very highly rated prospect and some other immediate help, because otherwise the Canucks just get worse, and they are in win-now mode.
If Kesler is going to Detroit, Datsyuk is coming back to Vancouver. 1 for 1 deal
I know Kesler is a really good player when healthy but don't you think you are overestimating him if you place his value as equal to Datsyuk? Datsyuk is probably in the conversation for top 5 C's in the entire league. I don't think Kesler is quite at that level yet, if he ever gets there.

Detroit would probably do it. Van probably says no.
This deal is dependent on how good GMs thing Nyquist will be. If Detroit thinks hes a superstar in the making they decline. If VAN thinks hes a superstar in the making they accept. I am not a professional scout so I am not really sure where I peg Nyquist but he has the tools to be the next Z or D (from the wing).

U follow Detroit? Filppula is a VERY good 2-way player, who can play both center/wing. The first season he played full 2-line duty - he gets 66p, +18. The guy plays pp, pk and is very good defensively.
This said - I would do the trade from Vancouvers point of wiew, IF Filppula was signed long-term. He is only 1 year from UFA and Nyqvist and Kindl are not enough to get Kesler. Sign Filppula to an extension 16mill/4yrs and do the trade. From Detroits point of wiew I`m not sure I would!? Kesler wasn`t exactly a force last season...

We have no incentive to trade Kesler for lesser players
Kesler ain't moving. There's the whole '3 amigos' thing with Kesler, Burrows and Bieksa. Unless the Canucks are blowing things up none of the core are going anywhere.
You can get the value close as you want, the Canucks aren't about to trade Kesler. Would open a huge void at centre ice, on the PK and amongst the leadership group.
One of those ones you can argue until you're blue in the face. It ain't happening.
I wouldn't move Kesler for Datsyuk. I know I'll get flamed for this, and I know Dats is the better player, but Datsyuk is getting there in age and is a whole 7 years older than Kesler.
For what I'd want out of Detroit? Smith+Filppula+ for Kesler+Ballard.
Filppula 81 games 66 points. Kesler 77 games 49 points. Both equally good defensively. I wouldn't even trade Filppula for Kesler straight up right now.

What if Vancouver fails to go deep into the playoffs next season? If this happens, I feel the a shakeup may be in order.

Depends on what happens. If it's like last year and they are missing a Sedin and lose to a team that barely lost at all on route to the cup... then i don't think much changes.
If they completely tank, lose the NW div, Schneider sucks and are out in round one then ya... they might look to tweak things.
