According to RDS, Habs are offering a two year contract for 5,5 million (total). PK wants a long term contract.
I think Habs should bonify their offer in terms of $$$, but 2 years seem the right length, for the time being.

It would be the first decision by the MB regime that I fully disagree with . Don't know how you can sign Prust to a 4 year 2.5M/per deal, and then only offer P.K 250K more per year... that's ludicrous (and I wasn't against the Prust signing).
lock up PK long-term (5-7years) at anything below 5M$, mid-term (3-5) at anything under 5.5M$.
don't dick the kid around just because you can. If he is to be a cornerstone piece, and everything he's done indicates that he is/will be, don't waste time screwing around trying to convince him that he'll get his pay day later on. The precedent league-wide for players of PK's talent/age is pretty established, regardless of what you can get away with technically, lowballing an elite athlete is the perfect way to ensure you'll never get any "hometown" consideration on future deals.

Don't give him a long term deal but for 2 years, 5.5M is low for sure. He's already shown his worth 4+M for each year.
His raise will be based on what is anticipated from him, not on what he's already accomplished. I wouldn't want to pay $4M+ as a reward for what Subban has produced, which has been good but not on all-star level.

i love price, but if the habs were smart they would have locked him LONG term a few years ago and dealt with a much lower cap hit. i'm tired of the 'waiting for players to prove themselves before i give them big money' kind of thinking...when the players we are dealing with are our franchise. It was a FACT that price would get better as he aged and the same can be said about Subban so what the hell are we waiting for? Wait for him to burst out and then be forced to pay him a cap hit of 6 million +? Capitalize on the fact that he had less than 40 points in a season when its a given that he'll score more in his prime and get him signed long term with a good cap hit.
short term contracts for thoroughbreds are just asinine in my opinion. Especially for ones with a good work ethic and that strive to better themselves all the time.
i don't think there is a clear cut right answer to this. If it was such an obvious decision, all GM's would lock up there young players for a decade if they show promise.
I don't think giving a young unproven player a long term deal is the way to go personally. I think the player needs to earn it first.

I think he meant that a typical team will only draft one Subba-caliber player per decade.
Anyway, our defense is weak enough as is. Without Subban we could spend three to five years in the league basement.
The last one was Markov in 98. Before that, Chelios in 81. Seriously, drafting #1 dmen who play on the top unit in every situation, who regularly outperform the opposition's best, doesn't happen often.

Beaulieu's progression over his 19 year old season is nothing like Subban's. He'll have to have a huge year to catch up to PK's development.
