This has kind of been on my mind lately, and I really couldn't pin point what playing style he resembles. When I think of ZBogo, I always think of Chris Pronger...but that is prolly because Pronger's a Defenceman that you build your franchise around and we all feel the same about Zach.

Some may laugh at this, but I still say Zach Bogosian carries many of the similar tools and game of Shea Weber. Big physical horse who can log minutes and be a beast physically. Huge shot from the point. Strong and smooth skater. 6'3" 215+. Offensively gifted and can be relied upon to log those heavy minutes against the opponents best.
Zach isn't there yet, admittedly. But we're also talking about a 21 year old (last season), 22 years old now. Young. Very young, especially for an NHL defenceman. But for me, the tools and realistic potential are all there, not to mention the dedication and desire Bogosian illustrates.
As I said, some may laugh at the comparison, and perhaps others just won't see it, maybe I am off the mark, but for me Zach Bogosian will become Shea Weber for the Winnipeg Jets. Maybe not AS good given it's hard to realistically compare a young defenceman to a Norris Trophy caliber defenceman, but I'm a believer. I ranted and raved last summer about what I believed to be Zach Bogosian as someone who watched his OHL career, and not to toot my own horn or float my own boat, but he sure didn't let me down.
Shea Weber is 5 years older than Zach Bogosian, give Zach some time here to polish up and round out and I believe in 2-3 years he's going to be one hell of a defenceman. I am also a firm believer that Zach Bogosian will round out to be an all-around defenceman at both ends of the ice and he'll score us at least 15 goals, 40-45 points a year.
Going with Guerzy on this one: Shea Weber. I fully expect Bogo's offensive game to continue to develop and he won't just be a shutdown guy like he was last year. In a few years he could be putting up 45+ pts a year, playing physically-dominant defensive hockey and playing 25+ minutes a night. Weber seems the most comparable to me, at least from current players.

Agreed I've been saying for a while he is a slightly better skating Shea Weber with slightly lower hockey sense (obviously not on the same level right now though)

Not laughing here...I am a big booster, and feel the guy can be a stalwart on the Jets for the next 15 years
I would also like to add a great comparable that Ron Maclean came up with on one of our matinee games on CBC. he said Zach reminded him of big Chris Chelios and all the guys on the panel thought that was a perfect comparison and I instantly went, YEA that's the one. Chelios, for those of you who are too young to have seen him in his prime was really special.
I have to run but will come back to add to this post later.

...which is why I have been on the 'put him with Enstrom' bandwagon. Enstrom has, by far, the best hockey sense on the D and if Bogo could learn from him it would add the one missing ingredient. I know it takes time for D-men to develop this, but, with all due respect to Garett's arguments to the contrary, we are developing a potentially great defenseman here and we should do everything in our power to nurture that. I don't see a big downside either, given the rather lacklustre performance of our D last season.

I don't know if he will ever be considered the best D man in the league. I wouldn't be surprised is he gets into the conversation though. I hope he can. I am very high on Bogo's upside.

Agree. I don't think he'll become a clone of Shea Weber, and I don't want to overrate him and put him in direct comparison to a Norris Trophy caliber defenceman, but I do think he'll become quite similar.
It's exciting, really, because as it stands now we're not viewed as a team with an elite or star player, but in time, quite possibly sooner rather than later, I do think it's safe to say the likes of Kane, Bogosian and Pavelec could become star players in their respective positions given how they will (hopefully) contribute.

Agreed on Kane and Bogo, my apprehension about Pav is well documented though.
That said, none of it means much until we find a top end centre or a few very good ones.

Great comparison! He isn't there yet, but I can certainly see Zach growing into a Chelios.
Does anyone think that the way the Trashers handled Bogo and their prospects ie immediately put their 1st rders in the NHL, that it might have adverse effects on his/their development? Maybe it's because I'm also a Wild fan and I've seen too many of our prospects get ruined, but they way they've done it sounds like such a terrible idea.

If they stayed in ATL, yes. Now that they are here, Bogo and Kane have a greater chance to meet their potential. Burmistrov is the player most hurt by this. He should have been in the AHL even last year, nevermind his rookie season! (JUST MY OPINION)
Chelios is the comparison that stands out most. Like Guerzy and others have said, I do see elements of Weber in him as well.

Time will tell, I guess.
Bogosian had some rough patches in his first 3 seasons, but things have turned out pretty good, all things considered. Kane has been on a steady rise since his rookie season. Burmistrov probably would have benefited from an extra year in junior.

I'd sign Bogo for a billion years. (Back-loaded, of course).
Ok back after cleaning the cottage and the boat for half the day.
The reason I like the Chelios comparison that Maclean used is four primary factors:
FIRST: they both have really efficient skating with nice top end speed. Chelios in his prime seemed like he could comfortably play half the game and not float because he was blessed with an effortless skating stride and nice top end speed. Zach has that in spades, when Toby and Hainsely went down and Zach was thrown into the fire and forced into some high minute games (27 to 30 minutes as i recall) he actually played better and started making less mistakes. I felt like I was watching a thoroughbred that was coming of age when the most was needed, demanded and expected of him. For me it was the watershed moment when I went "Wow that kid has serious pedigree".
SECOND: they both have a passion for fitness and are freaks. Bogo is a bit of a legend with his fellow players and the training staff. His V02 Max is off the charts and he is a flat out beast in most of the physical categories. also like Chelios he has a great work ethic and loves to train and improve. Unlike some of our top end talent motivation is the least of our worries with Bogo and that is similar to Chelios
THIRD: they both have that sweet stroke from the point. this past season I was really impressed with how Bogo could adjust and get his shot through traffic. He was really effective and used it as a weapon and that was one of Chelios's primary assets. They both have a great shot.
FOURTH: hitting and physical play, they both bring it. Chelios had a mean streak and although Bogo is lovable he has a penchant for that "blow up" borderline dirty hit when the game starts getting intense. Bogo also has a nice appetite for consistant physical play and that is so much like Chelios.
Ok the reality check!!! Chris started in the NHL late as a 22 year old but hit the ground running whereas Zach made the NHL as an 18 year old. Chelios seemed to have a very high Hockey IQ right off the bat and that is something our man Bogo started to display last season but has a long way to go to match Chris's level. Chelios had much better veteran D partners with those habs teams so he was lucky (like Doughty with Scuderi). One upside is Bogo is 3" taller and 20 pounds heavier and has all the same raw skills so let's all cross our fingers and hope that he reaches the same level and maintains that high level for as many years as Chris but all in a Jets uniform
