I haven't really kept up with this since the first couple of days I thought on 14 ppl were killed how come he's getting charged for 24 counts

I know next to nothing about the law in regards to cases like these...

But perhaps it's that he's being charged with different "Degrees" of attempted murder? Like "Murder in the 1st Degree", "Murder in the 2nd Degree", etc. Perhaps pertaining to the weapons he had used?
