He would have to go trough waivers in order to be sent to the AHL. If he's not claims, it means we couldn't have traded him. If he's claimed then we'll have lost him for nothing.
I'm puzzled you mentionned Ryan McDonagh. He was drafted the same year as Weber yet he's now a top pairing defensemen. McDonagh might have been in the NHL and certainly AHL earlier if he didn't opt to stay this long at Uni since he ended up becaming a NHL regular in his first pro season. A far cry from Beauchemin or Hainsey who became regulars in their mid 20ies after getting waived.
Weber could become a decent defensemen down the road but I'm not sure we can afford to be patient with him with so many good young defensemen coming up. With Ellis, Beaulieu, Tinordi and another waive of good prospects in Dietz and Thrower coming after them there won't be place left for him.
I don't think losing Weber to waiver is too much of a concern. The loss on the waiver is whatever 6th round draft pick we could have had for Weber. The potential gain is higher as he could actually develop.
I think the odds of getting value out of Weber are low, but we might as well take that those odds.
Victim of our redundent defense i guess. Also playing him as a forward sometimes on the fourth line was not the right option for his developement. All i can say is come to camp and win yourself a spot kido.

I am unsure of what he'll actually become but reality is, this isn't helping him either way. I think its rarely that he plays 4th line wing instead of D, its that he plays 4th line wing instead of sitting in the press box. When there are at least 6 D playing better than you, you don't play D, but in Weber's case he's also entered the lineup at F when there were injuries.
Good trade this loser to edmonton for ryan whitney in last year of his contract,because you need some size and left handed shot to run powerplay if markov can't play full season.

Nash was atrocious in his call up and just missed a year. St-Denis is a little smarter, but softer and left handed Weber.
This is definitely Weber's final chance with this team. He showed good things last season in the first 15 games or so. He was doing what we expected him on the Powerplay and he was playing good defensively. He was outplaying Subban at that stage and then I don't know what happened, might have been an injury or him getting benched by Martin but after that he wasn't the same and he started playing like the Weber we've been seeing in the last two years. Some people have to realize that he's the same age as Subban and that normally defensemen take longer to develop than any other position. He has some interesting tools and could still become a light version of Streit. But he has to change a couple of things on how he plays. He has to stop calling for the puck on the PP only to hesitate to shoot at the last minute and pass it back to his D partner. His positioning defensively is average but he absolutely has to be paired with another defenseman who plays a rugged game and clears the net because that's where Weber struggles the most imo. He's strong enough to hold his own behind the net and beside the boards to break the play and he doesn't really shy away from contact either. The thing is all of our current NHL defensemen are ahead of him on the depth chart and Diaz is what Weber should be in a couple of years so he doesn't have that going for him.

Those kind of posts make me laugh. You just said it yourself, what you're offering is crap so why would a team be willing to deal a top 6 forward for that package. Im not a big fan of Weber but i do think he could find his niche as a # 5-6th D and big shot PP specialist on another team. With the right development and icetime i still think he could reach his potential and be a regular somewhere. Just not in Montreal , especially with all the upcoming young defensemens in the system.

I think he can be an NHL player, but i just don't see it happening in Montreal. My guess is that we keep him around as our 8th d-man/13th forward unless we can get a 3rd or something for him.
We've all seen the team give away young prospects after a couple of years with the Habs only to see them develop into solid players elsewhere. Lapierre, D'Agostini, O'Byrne, S Kost, Grabovski comes to mind.
Weber is on a good contract and he provides the team with great depth. His numbers both in the OHL and the AHL were solid and are testament to his potential.
Do you jump to conclusions and make snap judgments often? He actually wasn't bad and had only two games to prove what he could do. Your approach to assessing players sounds much like the approach Gainey/Gauthier used when they rated McDonagh.
