Toronto signs Morgan Rielly to his ELC

Per HF poster Declan in the Prospects thread

The #Leafs have signed first-round draft choice Morgan Rielly to a three-year entry level contract.
And, let's just put a stop to this right before it even started, yes, Brian Burke said he was the best player in the draft. GMs will always say this, so we don't need 20 mocking "Best player in the draft! " posts, capiche?

BTW, I am going to misspell this guy's name a million times. When does I ever come before E except after C!!

Good to hear, can't wait to see him this year, fully healthy in the Dub.

^When do you expect Rielly to make the Leafs? 2013-14 season? Will he get 9 games this year (barring no lockout?)

Well, Burke just single handedly overrated his own prospect so I'd lie if I said I wasn't at least a tiny bit intrigued buy this phenom called Reilly. It would be nice that a TO prospect actually lives up to his hype for a change.

Probably the only way he gets 9 games is if one of Toronto's regulars gets injured or he plays unimaginably well during during camp/pre-season.

Carl Gunnarsson - Dion Phaneuf
John-Michael Liles - Cody Franson
Jake Gardiner - Mike Komisarek
Korbinian Holzer

Don't think he will need any AHL time, so ya, probably 13-14 season barring any set backs.

As for the 9 games, I am thoroughly against him getting 9 as that can lead to temptation to keep him up but many leaf fans feel he should at least get 9 if he impresses during the preseason.

but he's better than those bottom 2 already. I dont think carlyle will cut him if he deserves a spot.

Carlyle will probably need Komisarek because outside of him and Phaneuf our D is soft. Franson is the only other guy I see on that NHL roster that could be replaced by Rielly.

it feels like there is more than usual this year.

could be because of the potential new ELC restrictions in the CBA (though those may not have applied to this year's class anyways).

Carylye isn't going to put 5 offensive D men into the line up. We already have Liles, Franson, Phaneuf and Gardiner as offensive players. He will look more towards tougher players, such as Komi and Holzer over Rielly at this point.

I'm sure agents are afraid of possible restrictions in the new CBA.

He'll go back to jr. If one of our top 7 is moved he might stick but I doubt it.

Clearly the agents are working the angles here since so many of the first rounders have already signed -- they must be thinking the 5-year ELC is going to be a factor, or are at least hedging their bets.

Good signing for the Leafs, the kid's a good 'un.

If they keep the German origin of a name, it happens all the time. I know, I have it in my last name...

Phaneuf is a two-way defensemen, although I agree our defense would be way too offensively oriented if we inserted Rielly in over Komi. How quickly things change, wasn't that long ago our defense seemed too defensive and lacking in offensive guys after Kaberle trade, Phaneuf, Beauchemin/Aulie, Schenn, Komisarek, Gunnarsson to a lesser extent

Do Toronto fans want him to jump straight into the NHL? I mean more often then not, it hurts a players development. Theres not many prospects who have had their development stunted in the AHL.

I'm not going to comment if he can or not since I haven't seen one game of his, but it seems like he would be one of the players that could benefit from being #1 in the AHL, rather than being #5-6 on the big club.

No, we want him to go back to Moose Jaw for at least one more year.
