But, he was the best player in the draft!.

Let me show you a picture of how posting this makes me feel:

But seriously. He could be the best. I think he's definitely top-5.

Hope they don't rush this kid to the bigs like they did Schenn. I still think Luke would be a completely different player today if he'd spent a year in the AHL.

I'm not going to comment if he can or not since I haven't seen one game of his, but it seems like he would be one of the players that could benefit from being #1 in the AHL, rather than being #5-6 on the big club.
Its NHL or back to junior for Rielly.
I think the only way he gets any NHL time is if he impresses enough to get a top 4 spot. even then i hope its only for 9 games

No way he's ready to step in this season.

Back to Moose Jaw and then hopefully the Marlies next year.

Let me just state that we had this player ranked #1 /= best player in the draft. With Burkes well known distaste for Russians, the next obvious choice would be Murray who one could believe Burke could have had Rielly ranked higher. Therefore, just by process of elimination using a GM's draft tendencies, it really isn't that surprising that he had Rielly ranked #1. The only flaw to this logic is the american Galchenyuk, yet even he has a strong Russian connection, hell he even holds the accent.

Is Burke really dumb enough to draft based on nationality? Especially when the Russians are playing out of the CHL?

Except Schenn wasn't eligible for the AHL, so it was NHL or back to the dub.

Nope. Passports don't matter, the fact that each Russian (or descented) player have clouds around him did.

I'm not sold that the ELC contracts are guaranteed to be longer in the new CBA, but the threat of a potential 5 year ELC is enough for them all want to sign ASAP.

Why would the GM's want to sign them to ELC quickly? 5 year ELC is a huge plus for owners and GM's.

The GMs don't want to sign them quickly, but the players and agents want to get them done before the potential CBA issues.

If your top 10 pick and his agent come to you in July and say "let's get this deal done", as a GM are you willing to risk telling him "No, I think we will wait till mid-September to see if we can keep your contract cheaper for a longer time"?

I just don't think either side wants to prolong it too long.

I was hoping we could wait until after the new CBA to sign our picks, that way we could sign them hopefully for 5 year ELC.

No surprise a lot of guys are getting these deals done now while the CBA is still positive for them. Who knows what will happen so better to get inked in the present.

I think most would agree that him going back to junior for next season makes the most sense. Lost too much time due to injury last year so getting that year in would be really beneficial especially since the AHL isn't an option for this season. No point rushing him. Rather see him reach his potential. If he hadn't missed this year then things might have been interesting, but easy enough call to let him go back.

Not sure if your being sarcastic. But the situation is identical. Leaf's sign 5th overall selection defenseman and rush to the big show where he eventually crumbles under the pressure.

If you haven't noticed, Burke isn't only one who has abandoned the idea of drafting Russian talent.

You realize that signing him means jack **** about where he is playing this year. He can (and will) go back to junior for a year without burning any years off his ELC. If you haven't noticed, most of the top ten picks have been signed.

Hopefully he gets another year or two in Moosejaw and tears it up there and then makes the Leafs. If they don't rush Rielly, he will be unreal.
