2012-13 NHL Standings Predictions

I thought it might be fun for us to predict where all the teams in the league will finish next year, including our own beloved Canes. My predictions are a little bold, but here they are.

They have a poll pretty similar to this that I should of started voting on. But it's been up already for weeks so I'm kinda glad this thread came along.

East:
1. New York
2. Boston
3. Carolina
4. Pittsburgh
5. Philadelphia
6. Buffalo
7. Ottawa
8. Washington
--------------------------------
9. Winnipeg
10. NYI
11. Tampa Bay
12. Montreal
13. New Jersey
14. Florida
15. Toronto

West:
1. Los Angeles
2. Vancouver
3. St. Louis
4. Detroit
5. Chicago
6. Dallas
7. Minnesota
8. San Jose
-----------------------------------
9. Colorado
10. Nashville
11. Calgary
12. Edmonton
13. Columbus
14. Anaheim
15. Phoenix.

While the offseason is almost finished, Doans signing could alter my predictions.

EDIT: I should of swapped BOS and CAR. Tuuka Rask starting in net the whole year is a small question mark, but adding Hamilton in the mix will still keep the defense STRONG.

It'll be fun watching these two polar opposite teams duking it out again this year. Maybe this will be the year Rask blows his lid and goes ape **** on the canes.

Northeast:
Ottawa (3) - oh yeah, I went there
Boston (6)
Buffalo (9)
Toronto (13) - Burke fired mid-season
Montreal (14)

Atlantic:
Rangers (1) - pres
Philadelphia (4)
Pittsburgh (7)
New Jersey (T10)
Islanders (15)

SECSECSEC:
Carolina (2)
Washington (5)
Tampa Bay (8)
Florida (T10)
Winnipeg (12)

Central:
St Louis (2)
Chicago (4)
Nashville (7)
Detroit (9)
Columbus (15) - loses lottery... again

Northwest:
Vancouver (1) - by default, that division sucks
Minnesota (8)
Colorado (10)
Edmonton (12)
Calgary (14)

Pacific:
Los Angeles (3)
San Jose (5)
Dallas (6)
Phoenix (11)
Anaheim (13)

SE will be the only division with no "losing" teams again this season. Anaheim will make sure the Pacific gives them a run for their money though, as could the Isles if they're more ready for prime time then I expect. I think they're another year or two out though personally.

God, we really are setting ourselves up for disappointment with all the #2/#3 seed in the east predictions. Don't get me wrong, I do like the changes on the forward front by JR, but we still have a hole at 3C, a soft bottom 6, a weak defense and no backup goalie. I won't try to predict all the standings, but I'm guessing the Canes are fighting it out for the 6-8 spot.

Hope you guys are right and I am wrong.

Edit: I also think Montreal is going to surprise some teams this year. A better year by Price, if they can get Markov healthy and if 1 of their young guys step up, I can see them making some noise.

Call it optimism, but the SE is wide open this year. We have the best top 6 and the best goalie, but a weak defense and at least somewhat questionable bottom 6. Washington lost Semin and is having to rely on two unproven goalies, but their defense is probably the best of the 4 contenders. Tampa's goalies are a serious question mark, as is their bottom 6 IMO. Florida has everything go right last year, but is that the Dineen coaching or is that going to come back to reality this year? I think, especially if Welsh, Dalpe, Bowman, or Boychuk pans out this year, we're in the best shape on paper. Winnipeg is still a couple years away baring a breakout by Burmistrov or Scheifele. When those two are going though, with that defense, I'm going to be glad that they'll likely be in the west by that point.

East
1. Carolina
2-7. Teams

West
1-8. Teams

Seriously though, I don't think our bottom 6 is that bad. Now that we've improved our top 6, fringe (well "fringe" is generous) top 6 guys are now gonna be pretty solid bottom 6 guys, like LaRose and Tlusty. C'mon, how good does our 4th line have to be? Defense is a question mark but it's not like any other team in the SE is totally complete.

Western:
1. Los Angeles Kings - same dominant team
2. St. Louis Blues - deserved their seeding last year, only lost Colaicavo
3. Vancouver Canucks - added another top pairing guy: Jason Garrison
4. Chicago Blackhawks - still young and really good
5. San Jose Sharks - aging but great
6. Detroit Red Wings - aging but great
7. Dallas Stars - added a bunch of talent
8. Anaheim Ducks - added two top 4 defencemen
-----------------------------------------------
9. Minnesota Wild - you can have stars on an overall mediocre team
10. Phoenix Coyotes - a lot of promise on team (OEL), but not enough
11. Colorado - meh
12. Edmonton - getting closer, but still sooo young
13. Columbus - yeah
14. Calgary - ok
15. Nashville - ahahaha

Eastern Conference
1. Pittsburgh: not even close
2. Boston: not even close between rest of East and top 2
3. Winnipeg: not trolling, very good team which added 2 good veterans
4. Washington: great team, Hunter made them crappy
5. Philadelphia: awesome forwards, who will play D?
6. New York Rangers: Nash is a bit overrated, defense is still awesome
7. Tampa Bay: Stamkos, plus they have a good, deep D now.
8. Carolina: net gain is not as high with loss of Sutter, Allen
-------------------------------------
9. New Jersey: Parise + Elias getting older, lost Poni, just Larsson now
10. Ottawa: Nothing besides Spezza + Karlsson
11. Florida: lost Garrison
12. NYI: why not
13. Buffalo: sure
14. MTL: I am rapidly
15. Toronto: Losing interest

My prediction is that a couple months will be missed due to the lockout, the season will resume around Dec/Jan, injuries will strike the Canes hard and we'll miss the playoffs.

Just bringing the karmic balance to a topic of optimism.

I believe Huricanista means the net gain could of been higher without the loss of Sutter and Allen. Obviously keeping Sutter means no Staal, but our net gain could of been through the roof next offseason with Staal signing as a UFA.

I think that players like allen and sutter are the pieces needed to push us over the top. Their defensive capabilities are needed to give some time and space to other fowards and especially our D. It's a moot point though, because staal wasnt leavin Pittsburgh without Sutter coming the other way.

In a perfect world, we could be seriously considered for cup contention as soon as this year. Although, I'm sure it wont be too long before we start hearing elsewise. Im so very glad that we got staal to strengthen the top 6, and we'll be alright rolling with an average defense and bottom 6.

^ the Jets will probably miss the playoffs, but the thought of knocking that s*** team out made it too irresistable to not put them in the 6 spot

I'm as excited as I've been in years heading into the season for a lot of reasons. The best top 6 (on paper) we've seen in a while with the addition of J. Staal and Semin, a motivated (hopefully?) Eric Staal, a full season under Muller, some key young guys with a season or two under their belt (Skinner, Faulk, McBain, Tlusty), etc. And I agree there are some question marks in the SEC and any team can have something happen and take the SEC (like happened with FLA last year). We have as many question marks as those other teams (backup goalie, will Semin work out, how will our top 6 mesh, bottom 6, defense, 3rd line center, etc...)

Washington is a real wildcard for me. Yes, the lost Semin, but they have a strong defense, they added Ribeiro, the get Backstrom back (he missed 1/2 a year), and they have a new coach so who knows how that will work. If Mike Green stays healthy and if Holtby plays well, they will be tough to beat.

Tampa all depends on their goaltender and if their "older" D can stay healthy (Ohlund, Salo, Carle, Brewer, Hedman, Aulie). If Lindback plays well, they are likely to win the division. Last year, they were top 10 in scoring and should be again this year. They were middle of the pack in shots allowed, but worst in the league in goals against and save%. Their goaltending is what kept them out of the playoffs last year, plain and simple.

Florida? Who knows

Anyhow, I'm not saying the Canes have no chance to win the SEC as it is open, but it "appears" that many think it's almost a given. Not only do a lot of things have to go well for Carolina, but some things also have to go poorly for other teams. Nonetheless, I am excited. A very successful season for me will be a trip to the playoffs, 1 or 2 young guys (Welsh, Bowman, Dalpe, Boychuk, Murphy, Samson, etc...) stepping up to take a roster spot, and Semin fitting in and signing an extension mid season.

If a lot of things go well, they can take the division, but for now, I'm trying to be realistic and sticking with my fighting it out for the 6-8 spot.

Ill combine threads here. My bold prediction for the standings: one of Boston, NYR,Philadelphia, or Pittsburgh (many people are considering them locks) to miss the playoffs. One of Florida/Tampa/Washington finishes in the bottom 3 in the East.

Yep, that is what I meant. We downgraded slightly at defense, and to me loss of Sutter is very significant, so I'd say we only truly added one piece (Jordan Staal is in a very high echelon as a possession player), Sutter and Semin are a wipe, and Corvo is a slight downgrade.

All in all...we're a moderately improved team with a coach that everybody raved about, and a few young players whose full potential is unknown. To me, that means playoffs, but no SE division championship.

Also, people are forgetting that we were a bad team last year. It remains to be seen how much *less bad* we are. You can have star players on bad teams, so Staal and Semin aren't any guarantee of success.

Also, people are forgetting that we were a bad team last year. It remains to be seen how much *less bad* we are. You can have star players on bad teams, so Staal and Semin aren't any guarantee of success.
Agreed, but last season was also historically bad for most of the team.

Staal's 70 points in 82 games matches a post-lockout low, and he had by far the worst start to a season he's ever had which is saying something considering he's a notoriously slow starter to begin with.

Skinner missed a good chunk of the season due to injury after a hot start and it took a while after returning for him to get back to being Skinner.

Jokinen's 46 points are the lowest of any season which he's spent with one team.

Ruutu likewise had the worst season he's ever had in one location, minus that season in Chicago where he only played about a dozen games due to injury.

Pitkanen missed over half the season with an injury.

So that's basically 5 of the Canes top 7 players (Ward, Sutter being the other two) from last year that had seasons well below their typical level of play.

If those 5 players have even average seasons for them in terms of performance this team is nowhere near as bad as it was last year. Trade out Sutter who's a top shutdown center with what's so far been limited offense for a top shutdown center with vastly superior offense, and add Semin for free and it's a much improved team. The only area that it arguably got worse in was on D (Corvo for Allen), but that's even mitigated by the fact that Pitkanen shouldn't be expected to miss anywhere close to 52 games next season.
