I hate this Doan crap, it makes me miss the Jagr stuff from last summer.

The same people saying how they don't want Doan at four years, 24 million are the same ones who criticize Shero for not getting Sid his elite linemate.

Face it, in today's NHL, you have to overpay unfortunately. Not everyone's going to take a sweetheart deal like Crosby, Malkin and Neal have. You will have to overpay for a player or two that will have a big impact on your roster. Doan is one of those guys that would have a huge impact on our team.

Where did this 24m/4yrs thing come from? It's 30m/4yrs.

7.5m...Pens aren't that desperate.

Also, 35+ rule. No thanks.

His asking price seems pretty unreasonable to me.

Apparently the Pens offered 24/4. 10,8,4,2 (or something close to that). I'd probably do 4yrs/6m as long as whatever NTC/NMC expires before the last year. If the cap hit is more than 6m, forgot it.

His agent has denied it several times but for whatever reason people keep bringing it up.

He turns 36 around the first week of the season. 4yrs, locked in at 6m/yr? His team got better offensively last year than his 60pt season and his numbers dropped instead, he played 9 more games too.

He's the best UFA available right now, but when you look at the other options, is that really something worth bragging about? You could probably get similar production out of Andrei Kostitsyn and pay much less for 1-2yrs and not mess with the Pens cap.

2014
* Sutter is an RFA
* Letang is a UFA
* Kunitz is a UFA
* Malkin is a UFA

Oh...right, and so are these guys...
Summer of 2013
Iginla
Perry
Getzlaf
Lupul
Hartnell
Morrow
Clowe
Horton

Summer of 2014
Vanek
Gaborik
Heatley
Marleau
Kessel
Cammalleri
Hemsky
Bergeron
Callahan
M.Michalek
Pavelski...

You commit 4yrs to a 36yr old (at the start of the season)...it's not just some "hey at least we have him for 4yrs" type of deal, if he declines and with the style he plays, he will, with the 35+ rule and at the time of the contract being signed, it screws the Pens in the summer of 2013, which could be big for the Pens. As well as 2014.

If you are going to sign a guy to a 4yr contract and give him 6m, he better be around 29-30yrs old at the most. After 35...if you weren't really a 1st line guy, it gets worse. If it was Iginla that was a UFA and he wanted 7.5m/yr for 4yrs from the Pens, I'm signed up with all of you for a hells yeah. Why? Jarome has proven he could still be a 1st line winger and a 30+ goal scorer even at this age, at 35.

Yes you do have to over pay to bring in top UFA's. But for the money Doan wants he shouldn't be getting that payment from Shero. Even if he is a head case id rather bring in AK for half the asking price for 1-2 years. Rather than a +35 Doan that will probably be a fraction of the player that huge cap hit demands in the 3rd and 4th seasons of the deal.

Yeah I'm not sure why everyone still thinks those demands are a fact when his agent has denied it. I'd be pretty surprised if he gets over $5m a season if he gets a 3 or 4 year deal.

3 years $15M is about what I would consider the roof for Doan. Maybe slightly over that but not another year.

You have to overpay to get players in free agency. That's just a straight fact.

I love the fact that Larry Brooks and John Tortorella are in the same city and have to deal with each other on a daily basis

Well, you have to consider that this is probably going to be his last contract, and if he has to leave the team he's been loyal to his whole career, he's going to want to cash in on money and term.

He wants a 4 year deal, Shero rarely gives that term to someone over 30. Ray Shero's term for players 30 and older have been 1 or 2 years.

But Doan is different, he is everything the Penguins look for in a player. He's great player with solid leadership, he's gritty, his right handed shot would help the Pens, he just seems like a good character guy. So if the Pens really like him, I think they would go 4 years.

While I agree that the Pens have some of their own guys to sign, you can't pass on the possibility of adding Shane Doan just to wait for 2013 and 2014 for those free agents because they might not be available (and honestly, I think most of them will re-sign with their current teams).

Torts is a first class a-hole but I love it when he beats on Brooks. What a POS reporter that guy is, the frickin weasel. Makes Rossi seem tolerable. Torts - Brooks is like the Pens - Flyers of coach vs. reporters in hockey. Everything else is boring in comparison.

BTW I don't know if you guys have seen it but Doan did an interview with TSN during a recent autograph signing in Toronto. Basically said his main goal (as we all knew) was to stay in PHX, but threw out the "have to check my options and the longer this goes" routine to make PHX pony up. Mentioned family specifically. He's going nowhere.

Here's another gem from his TB days. Seems he hated Brooks well before coaching his first game in NY.

I believe his agent said the 7.5 mil thing was bull****. I could be wrong though. 4 years 24 million is a lot, but if Shero is willing to go there, then I have faith that he thinks Doan is the real deal solution.
