Feel so bad for the Canadian gals.

Played their hearts out, only to get robbed by two horrible ****ing calls.

I love how even "semi-famous" people on twitter were getting angry at the refs (ex Tavares)

some hockey people I saw angry:
Tavares
Quote:
The ref in this CAN vs US socer game is #bushleague
Jamie Benn
Quote:
I can hear the ref chanting U.S.A U.S.A. #BrutesCalls
our own prospect Lowry
Quote:
Did the referee just fist pump when she blew the final whistle? #weird
Quote:
I'm blind, I'm deaf, I want to be a ref! #gocanada
our own AHL/NHL cusp goaltender Dekanich
Quote:
Wow awful
Quote:
Nooooooooooo. I blame the penalty kick in 80th minute #badcall
just some to name a few

How much more revenue is generated if US wins? Is it worth it? Only way to explain these calls... #fix?

Anyone follow Ryan Whitney on Twitter? He really seemed to draw the ire of Canadians today:

Quote:

It would be literally impossible for Canadians to be complaining any more about the officiating in this soccer game.
A ton of people started chirping him after that and he replied to a ton of them with brash insults. However, he's since deleted all of those replies and instead tweeted this shortly before the game was over:

Quote:
Ryan Whitney ‏@ryanwhitney6
Well my last tweet certainly riled up some of you Canadian citizens. love the #passion. Going to be even tougher to take when US wins

What an inspiring performance by our ladies. I'm just livid and baffled at the East German figure skating judge who was reffing the game.

Most intense soccer game I've ever watched.. We had 'em too. Sinclair=Wickenheiser

When it comes to CDN soccer, we can be proud of 4th or Bronze.

Me too! Lots of great gals out there. Hopefully when there's a rematch next year it will be for a cup instead of a semi-final!

To be fair, both teams played pretty well - it's not the US team's fault that there were some questionable calls.

Extremely unfortunate: let them decide it on the field.

McLeod said Norwegian referee Christiana Pedersen told her that she had held the ball for 10 seconds.

"Not even close," McLeod replied.

Sinclair pleaded with Pedersen to reconsider.

"She actually giggled and said nothing," Sinclair said. "Classy."

Just disgraceful. That handball call was bad enough, but that '6 second' call was completely out of nowhere. I've played for years as a keeper, and have never seen a warning given for failing to put the ball in play after 6 seconds, let alone an indirect FK. You have to be deliberately wasting time.

I might just go to bed and hope all the news stories go away in the morning. American sites are maddening right now.

"Canada got soooo many breaks too"

Yeah, but we didn't get a penalty kick on two successive BS calls to tie the game late...

Theses Olympics have seemed more Bush League than normal, with the teenage timekeepers, the intentional losings, this. No drugs though

Hoping Japan beats the ever loving *** out of the Americans again.

There is a 6 second rule with keeping but I've never seen it called. They just usually warn the keeper to play it but they aren't supposed to hold the ball in their possession for more than 6 seconds. Still, the call was pretty bad. no way it was as long as the red is claiming there

Exactly.. I've seen a yellow card given to a GK for delaying, and that was in a Champions league game.. This was pretty brutal..

I have watched allot of footie since it became my favorite game after we lost the Jets 1.0. I have never seen that called.....bizzare to say the least.

There is no sport that guts you like football/soccer. Über low scoring, huge penalty area, and a penchant for diving leads to far more harsh outcomes that any other sport. The downside of the beautiful game.

really sad that such an epic game was tainted......Ryan Whitney has taken too many blows to the head if he is chirping after that Win? Ryan buddy take a history lesson and look up the 1972 basketball finals where the USSR was gifted Three chances (do overs) with three seconds on the clock and finally hit the hail Mary inbounds to steel the gold from your US team.

Anyways I am REALLY proud of our girls and so sad for them tonight.

Yes a verbal warning and or yellow card would have been the appropriate response.

The rule calls for a FK in this case with the Canadian keeper because she held it in her hands rather than having on the ground for that length of time (eg. taking a goal kick). It's one of those rules that is sort of in the book but never really called in practice. Especially not in a game of this magnitude.

Played keeper for many years and watched soccer for many more years on top of that.....The steps for keepers are ALWAYS 1) verbal warning 2) Yellow card 3) Never happens any longer after the yellow card because you can see a red....never ever seen a free kick given for this type of violation....that was one of the strangest calls I have ever seen in a soccer game never mind a semi final game wow

You're absolutely right. And I am german, so I have to know .... :>

I only saw the highlights of the game. They didn't say anything about that scene in the highlights in german television, just that there've been a "wrong goalkick". But we're not really interested in women football anyway
