The Habs would undoubtedly match that (5/30).

The (hypothetical) question is whether or not the Flyers should go into 4 1sts compensation territory (exceeding a total contract value of $42,054,880 or $8,410,976 per year on any deal less than 5 years).

If the Flyers offered 6 years / $42 M, the compensation would be our 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks in 2013 and 2014 1st round pick. I still think the Habs match this. Or maybe not. I'm not sure.

Any cap hit not exceeding $6.73 M on a contract no longer than 7 years would yield just a 1st, 2nd and 3rd in 2013. I think the only way the Habs have any chance of not matching an offer in that compensation class would be 4 years / $26.92 M. That way the contract would only buy Subban's remaining RFA years and he would be a 27-year-old UFA when the deal expired in the summer of 2016.

I think the best chance of getting a deal that the Habs won't match is a 8 years / $56 M (the Drew Doughty contract). Compensation would be 4 1st round draft picks and this requires a tremendous amount of faith that Subban will be a perennial #1 D. For me, the combination of Schenn and Subban is too tantalizing to pass up, but it's not my money.

The sky isn't falling.

FA d men out there that can replace him. If not going that road, prospects. Homer shouldn't try to make a trade right now. Every GM will try to abuse his position.

Pretty sure most Coyotes fans would disagree with you about Rozsival's play last season.

I have been discussing a trade with a Canuck fan who has been extremely reasonable on the main board. If Homer would try to get Edler from Vancouver, would you guys do a package of Simmonds+Gus/MAB/Manning+1st for Edler+2nd?

Something to consider, but moving any forwards puts a lot of pressure on filling holes and since we didn't sign any FA forwards we're going to have some questionable lines past the 1st.

Honestly, this is perfect for Manning/MAB/Gustafsson to get into the line-up. I'm convinced MAB will be a top-4 defensemen in the NHL at some point and hope it's sooner rather than later.

Maybe if the Flyers surprise everyone and grab Doan. Trading a forward wouldn't be that tough of a pill to swallow then.

Considering MAB was described as being "just fine" or "ok" by Holmgren like he described Mesz...I'm wondering if he is not fully healed and is having some issues with his head. So I'm not counting on too much from him. I actually would love to see Manning break out and secure a spot. Gus is serviceable but I'm just not completely sold on him but maybe he's ready to take the next step more consistently..

He's not an aggressive player, but he's FAR from "soft." And he certainly doesn't suck. Ask the Phoenix fans about that.

I dont give a rotten rats rectum what the Yotes fans said about his play last season, the last time he played in the Eastern Conference , he was booed out of NY and MSG they couldnt wait to get rid of the guy.... times arent that desperate that the Flyers need to start making moves for a washed up Euro defenseman .

The crowd at the Garden isn't necessarily known for its player evaluating acumen. And this is coming from a Rangers fan.

The hate really started with his refusal to shoot the puck on the PP. It was maddening. It kind of spiraled out of control from there. That he was somewhat overpaid didn't help. Still, his play was adequate (at worst).

If I knew he was healthy, I'd gladly welcome him back. The treatment he received at the end of his tenure in New York was baffling...and reprehensible.

This team has delivered out of the gates last season, even in the playoffs without Mesz, Timonen playing hurt and a dizzy Bourdon.

If they miss the playoffs this season it will not be a lone consequence of missing Meszaros for the first half of the season but the result of several players going on an extended (sophomore) slump and Bryz finding himself lost in the woods again.
