I think Ottawa could still use a top 6 winger, even with Alfie returning. It'll take an overpayment though, 3 years at 5 per or something.

My thoughts exactly. No need for another cancer in Ottawa.

I'd rather another defenseman, personally. Someone else who can move the puck.

There are no PMDs who are Free Agents, and comparing Kovalev and Kostitsyn is only accurate geographically. It has pretty much no other basis. Kostitsyn is a skill player who can be the best player on his line, be it the 2nd or 3rd, on any given night. He is also physical and okay defensively at least. Basically, if Kostitsyn was a bit more agitating, a decent amount less skilled and Canadian, people would be comparing him to Nick Foligno.

is this andrei were talking about here? he's an inconsistent russian that was caught late to curfew. seriously. oh god! the humanity

even though he never caused any trouble in montreal - on ice or off the ice, never complained - his only flaw being inconsistent, he is forever branded.

ah well, sucks for him.

Beauty assist on the 3rd goal. If he played like that every game.. he would have been signed right away.. in fact I doubt Montreal would have even traded him.

He was well liked in habs dressing room as well. This whole story is overblown.

But can a team simply just sign him up or do they have to go out there, find all the pieces and assemble him themselves?

While he didn't really cause any problems in MTL he was named in connection with the mafia that one time with his brother. Can't remember if that was false reporting or not.

The police were investigating people in and involved with the mafia IIRC. They had all sorts of evidence including recordings of phone conversations. During their investigation, they discovered that some of those phone calls had taken place between Mangiola (some low level guy trying to get involved with the mafia) and Akost, SKost and Hamrlik. The police reviewed those calls and did some investigation and found that while the 3 Habs had spoken to this guy and hung out with him in public, none of the players had spoken about or done anything illegal and that the calls were all of a social nature (not sure that is the term the police used but it was along those lines).

The press then picked the story up and ran with it, with someone on TV (RDS I think) getting highly upset when talking about it and calling it the darkest day in the history of the franchise (hence the 'darkest day' tag now used around that story). Lots of other people found very high horses and mounted them as quickly as possible and the story turned into creative broadcasting exercise with people claiming things such as 'the FBI were waiting for the Habs to arrive at the airport' after their game against the Pens that night to arrest certain players.

The media interest in the story was so strong, with so many claims thrown back and forth that a few weeks later, someone in the police investigation noted that after the story broke, they rechecked their evidence to make sure they hadn't missed anything in case the media had picked up on something they'd missed. Having rechecked their evidence, they discovered that they were right the first time and that they had no evidence that any of the players had done anything illegal.

Technically, they were linked to someone the police were investigating who did have ties to the mafia, but the connection between that person and the 3 players was purely social according to the evidence the police had.

So criminals own pubs, bars and restaurants? What's new?
So hockey players hang out in these places? What's new?
So RDS trying to make a big deal from everything European players playing for Montreal are doing? What's new?
So Quebec over-reacts? What's new?
I say all 3 players should be confessed and killed

Quebec born above average player want to sign with MTL? Well that's new

The only time where I'd see Kostitsyn signed by a non-NHL team is if a lockout abounds.

Just to nitpick, he's Belarussian.

But I'd add that his biggest crime in Montreal aside from some inconsistent/indifferent play was his complete lack of personality displayed for media and fans.

I had dismissed all the mafioso claims as prurient and sensationalism. But after hearing that he broke curfew, well, now it all seems to add up to something pretty nefarious. AK was clearly sent to Nashville to run the Tennessee arm of the Montreal Cosa Nostra.

I believe AK's options are:

-PHX
-WSH
-DET
-NYI
-FLA
-NJD
-CBJ
-BUF

His options are still open. With the CBA and NHL having negotiations the stand still could still last a couple weeks before we see any action in the NHL

I feel like AK would be a better offensive version of Korp but with less work ethic. Probably a good 2nd/3rd line guy on the Yotes. Wouldn't mind giving him 3.75 for 2 years.

AK does not fit well in defensive-minded teams. Jacques Martin's overly defensive style nearly scrapped his career. Phoenix, Nashville, and NJ, would make a mistake by hiring him, but teams like Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Boston (oh ****!!!), or Carolina (Muller knows him best) would certainly bring the most out of him.

When motivated, also hits like a train. He can be a bargain at 3.5/year.

As a Habs fan, I really would like him to stay in the West...
