Aside from Grossman being on the first pairing, how is that a bad lineup?

I don't see what all the fuss is about. Meszaros is a good defenseman, but the Flyers still have a quality lineup.

SNAFU. The team hasn't even gotten out of August and the starting line-up is crumbling. I guess I got my wish that the young guys would get a really serious chance to prove themselves.

Kimmo/Coburn/Grossmann/Schenn/Gustaffson/MAB

is it as bad as, or worse than...

LeTang/Orpiks/Martin/Niskanen/Engelland/Lovejoy.

Serious question. I'm not good at comparing.

We're spoiled, that's really the only reason. Many posters fear giving the rookies a shot, though they've proven to be viable options at the 5-6 spots. They see Lilja and Gervais' names in the 5-6 spots and have recollective nightmares of Lukas Kracijek, Ryan Parent, Randy Jones, and Steve Eminger. We get used to Homer and Snider throwing money around like candy on Halloween and expect to roll into the season with Suter and Boyle as our 3rd d-pairing ( )

Truthfully it's not an awful lineup at all, neither is the defense (even without Mez). The team needs to be better as a whole, and the 5th-6th dmen will be fine, whether they're in their early 20s or mid-late 30s. Also, Grossmann is in the 1st pairing because he co-shut down Malkin last year and pairs very well with Coburn.

Is that Pittsburgh's in last years playoffs? Definitely not what they'll have for those season since they'll have Despres at least in place of Lovejoy, which is a decent upgrade.

That said, I still like our defense better, but it's not by that considerable of a margin.

Gotta remember, we dont have Carle that can tank a ton of minutes, and Timonen needs to be backed off or he will look tired like he did the end of last year.

I just dont see how you think a Gervias-Lilja pairing as a solid or even average pairing. Lilja was getting scratched at times for rookies like Manning, while every team Gervias played on he was nicknamed Brutal Gervias. Their warning us about him like we warned teams about Randy Jones.

That third pairing is not that much better than Krajicek-Parent.

I have no problem giving A rookie a chance, but don't know how I feel about two rookies. It's not that hard to outbeat Gervias and Lilja. I have a feeling Gervias will start no matter how bad he does during training camp. He's one of those guys who still plays games for teams because they dont have faith in their rookies.

Completely agree, but I don't expect a Gervais - Lilja pairing. They'll break up Coburn and Grossmann if need be and roll a:

Coburn - Schenn
Timonen - Lilja
Grossmann - Gervais

Same if two rookies were to play together. I'm sure Gervais and Gus would work fine, Gus as gotten enough experience in the pros so far. I'd REALLY prefer for Timonen to play as much as possible with Schenn, but if someone like Lauridsen surprises in camp, Kimmo may need to be put beside him.

I see the clowns around here are in their mid-season hysterical form. Can't wait until Matt Walker plays. Some heads around here might explode.

And I see some clowns still like to complain about everyone else on these boards.

And you would hope for Matt Walker to make the team.

Not sure how I am complaining about anyone. I find this place and the posters very entertaining.

All I know is you hop on at times to complain about everyone else who is I guess complaining.

I dont see how people are going crazy is a bad thing when another of our defenders just went down and there is now a higher chance BOTH Lilja and Gervias are playing in the first game of the season.

I'm not a professional poster like a lot of people so I was not aware I have a known posting ideology around here which I now know is apparently complaining. But I'm not complaining. I just find the chicken littleism around here quite humorous. No complaints from me.

Eminger was good #6 d-man on 10-11. He just didn't have it this yr though and was a healthy scratch down the stretch for Stu Bickel, who is awful..

May the Gods Bless you with a winning lottery ticket or a tug job from Shania Twain, your choice.

There's just no chance we ice a Gervais/Lilja-Gustafsson/MAB pair. Not after Krajicek-Parent in 2009-10. And even then we could ice four different defenders who could play 30 minutes a game.

I have no doubt in my mind that we make a minor trade or sign Roszival.

I think Roszival might be a nice stop-gap option for one year, but I wouldn't sign him for more than that. What's the story with him anyway? Did he suffer a long term injury from the Brown check at the end there, or is he healthy?

If we're going into the season as is, which is the most likely scenario, a greater portion of the teams' success further hinges on Gustafsson not only solidifying his spot on the roster, but needing to be a consistent point producer.

What we have to realize is that even if he's going to be out at least half the season, he will still play this season. So we'd need to get someone for cheap, or cheap-ish.
