Alzner (and Carlson) held the defending champions top line to a combined 0 points in the first 5 games... Definitely better than Shattenkirk, an offensive defenseman's, 2 points total.

(Obviously that's not all Alzner did in the playoffs, but it's hard to describe Alzner's great defensive play.)

I'll go with the only player besides McDonaugh to finish in the top 20 amongst defensemen in Quality of Competition, Corsi Relative Quality of Competition, and Offensive Zone Start Percentage. For the people who don't understand just how good Alzner is in his own end, that should tell you everything you need to know. And FWIW, Shattenkirk was ranked 119th, 124th, and 163rd in those categories, respectively.

I love Shattenkirk, but I'd put Alzner slightly ahead of him. Shatty next, followed by Perron.

You're right, Shatty's only purpose for being on the ice is to score.

Completely disregard him having one of the best plus/minuses in the league along with being the fourth highest scorer on the team. Just look at a tiny sample size to make your decisions, even though Shatty was good in the first series too, it's just his team actually moved on to play a better team. Shatty for me.

He's been playing for longer but isn't better than anyone who's been picked so far.

Yes, of course.

But Perron over both. Alzner is next.

Facepalm? Really?

Shattenkirk has had one actual NHL season, and he wasn't given tough minutes, while Alzner has been on the top pairing for the past 2 seasons, as well as being the go to shutdown player for a playoff team.

He played FOUR years in the WHL for the Calgary Hitmen, and was their Captain. He was also one of two players on Team Canada in the 2007 WJC who hadn't been drafted yet, a team that won gold that year. The next year, he captained the Gold-Medal winning Team Canada during the 2008 WJC.

He led the Hershey Bears to 2 straight Calder Cups on the first pairing, and has been a rock ever since he entered the NHL. He's not as flashy as Shattenkirk, but i suggest you educate yourself more about him before facepalming about the obvious fact that he would go before Shattenkirk.
